This was my first real home console, and I know it had online support, but a.) I had no phone jack in my room and b.) My parents wouldn't pay for the online. Does anyone know what it was like?

It was kinda... scrambled? Pretty much it was up to each developer to set up and host a server so the services felt kinda broken. I know for myself, we only had dial-up for a good portion of the PS2 life. Where I lived, high speed wasn't an option so to connect to any game online was calling the ISP connect number, logging in, before finally getting into the game. To be fair I never did much with online even after getting high speed. There was never really a good use for it except for the Final Fantasy XI HDD module attachment (which I still want to find). If they did the a centralized system for online like Sega's SegaNet or Microsoft's XboxLIVE, it might have been an awesome feature but because of flaws in concept, I never really saw much growth of it.

If anyone knows of something I am not taking into consideration, feel free to correct me. I am just going by my personal experiences at that time.
