I wanted to see what everyone's picks for the best NES game is. My personal pick is for the original Contra. I still remember the first time I learned about that cheat code. U, U, D, D, L. R. L. R. A. B. Ahh... those were simpler days.

Contra's great, but I have to agree. If it's not the best game ever, Zelda's awfully close.

Super Mario 3!

Not only the best NES game, but possibly the best game of all time!

Agreed. I can still play this game today and find it as fun as I did as a child.

Definitely agreed. No question. I remember shaking when I got Mario 3 for xmas - parents had to sit me down with a milky cup of tea to get over it. What a loser hey!

I was all about the original Zelda and Super Mario Brothers. I still play them on emulators and I even got a USB NES controller so it is like I am still 8 years old... except now it is my wife instead of mom telling me to stop playing!

Yes, I played and enjoyed the Mario games, and the Zelda games., but did anybody else use to play 'Adventures of Lolo' (1 or 2)?

I really miss games with the simplicity and charm.

First Zelda. As someone else said, not even close. I would give Tecmo Bowl and Mike Tyson's Punch Out probably the next closest nods. The first Final Fantasy was groundbreaking for me (and much more fun than Dragon Warrior, which came first). And my best friend and I would play our made up teams in Baseball Simulator 1000's seasons endlessly.

Mad props to the Contra poster. I have to brag a little bit, but I got to the point where I could beat Contra with one guy.

Adventures of Lolo was fun...until I got to the room I couldn't beat and never picked it up again. I still hate that game because it got so frustrating for me.

My top games must have been Mario 1, 3, PunchOut and that Tiny Tunes game. Did anyone ever play that?

I played the shit out of that game - Tiny Tunes. I always could never beat it, usually I would get stuck a little bit after the stage with the crazy scientist guy.

Mario 1, 3, and lots of time was spent on the first Zelda and Contra.

Excuse me while I go fish through my emulator.

My favorite games were Little Nemo, Shadowgate (both have great soundtracks), SMB3, POW, Strider, Golgo 13, Castlevania and Megaman anything, Maniac Mansion, and there was so much more. Those are just the really memorable games to me. I could probably remember a hundred great games if I tried.

I freakin' loved the original Castlevania. It's one of my all-timers.

I never did beat that game. I could get to Drac, but couldn't kill him. That was on unforgiving game. They really don't make 'em like that anymore.

I am so surprised that no one has mentioned Tetris. I used to do all nighters playing Tetris.

I think its because this is the "best game for the system (NES)" thread, not the "best game for every system ever!!!" thread!! :P

ya, honestly, I think the only game I played more than Tetris on the NES was Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3.... I'm a Mario fiend!!

I love Tetris, but only if it's played on an original (green screened) GameBoy.

I'm in for a Mario 2 vote. Super Mario Brother is the game that put the system on the map. Everybody played it until their fingers hurt. I can remember tracking down the release of SMB2 for weeks until I found some shitty obscure toystore in BFE that expected a shipment on release day and all of their copies weren't spoken for. Mind you, I was 10 when this happened and no google maps for finding businesses. Played it after school and woke up at night when mom was asleep until it was beat down!

Good call with Tetris! I've played it on so many systems, I don't think of it as NES; It's more Gameboy in my world. A classic no matter what though.
