I mean they 100% recovered with the wii, but as far as consoles are concerned (not handhelds), this was the beginning of their troubles, yeah? The same era as the psx, the prequel to the gamecube, just seems like this big ugly box wasn't the most thought out idea.

Really? I loved my N64 to death. I can't even count how many great games were on it, or even how many hours I spent playing it.

What was so bad about this console?

The games seemed good to me at the time, but I was like 12 when i got one. I only had Zelda at first, but I got Mario 64, Waverace, Mariokart, Xtreme-G, Starcraft, a few others. From a technical standpoint, the fact that you had to upgrade the ram (expansion pak) and the fact that they didn't use discs made it a pretty expensive console for developers, and it had so few games compared to psx and ps2. I loved the controller - until i got a psx, I loved the capabilities - until i realized i could play music on my playstation, look at pictures, change memory cards, stuff that seems like it's not a big deal but it was pretty enamouring for a blossoming tech geek.

Say what you will about cartridges, but they STILL load hella fast. Blows my PS3 out of the water on load time.

I think you've missed the most important thing about the N64. Mario 64 REDEFINED gaming. Maybe you didn't notice because you were only 12. That alone deserves the utmost respect.

The console was great. The PS1 wasnt any fault of nintendo's. They may have made a miscalculation by not putting the games on discs, which the PS1 capitalized on, but it was still an extremely entertaining console with a lot of cutting edge features.

I disagree, the psx wouldn't have happened if it weren't for nintendo backing out on a deal, and the n64, while great for a few 1st party games, was 2nd in the console race for a reason. I don't think the console was bad, but it was rushed, ugly, and had a LOT of mistakes.

The Nintendo 64 and PSX each had their own short-comings and advantages. On cartridges, personally I liked them, it was a real trademark of Nintendo up until the Gamecube. Plus those cartridges were extremely durable, and you have to keep in mind that the N64 was marketed for younger kids as well as adults, and kids aren't always so careful with their toys. When I was little I had both these systems and I wasn't always so careful, but I can guarantee you that I can still play 100% of my N64 games while the majority of my Playstation games are now too scratched to work. I'd say that's a win for Nintendo.

Another mistake on the part of the Playstation was it's lack of 4 controller slots. Nintendo dominated party games. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent playing Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros., Duke Nukem 64, Rush, Golden Eye, (non 1st party games) etc. with three or more players. Another epic win for Nintendo.

And another thing, the N64 controller was in my opinion superior to the original Playstation controller (not the Dual Shock) for it had something that no console since then has lacked, a joystick.

The N64 was timeless, I'll always be able to pick up a controller and play that thing.

Well, I did play a fair amount of GoldenEye in college, (and it was a little weird that Nintendo was still using cartridges when all other major consoles had gone to disc... but you're saying the GameCube also sucked?

Man that hurts-- I really like the GameCube. The controller was awesome (wavebird was way ahead of its time) and the console was comparatively compact.

Like the Wii it wasn't about polygon count it was about the multiplayer gaming experience. Next thing you'll be hating all over windwaker and its cutesy japanese graphics.

You are totally entitled to your opinion, but dude, that stings.

I totally agree that this is where Nintendo started faltering. I disagree that they have redeemed themselves with the Wii.

Both consoles lack quality games and isn't that what it is all about. If anything Wii is worse since it doesn't have a GoldenEye.

I love my N64! It was the first system that I really got into. It had some extremely great games at the time and I think it pushed Sony to make better stuff for the PSX. Super Mario 64 looked great, even on a 17" screen, and it really started a new wave of games that had lush environments and smooth movement. Sure comparing it to some of today's games it looks lame to some, but at the time they came out they were great. The last time I put my PS3 beside my N64 I'm pretty sure the PS3 was "this big ugly box" too.

I wasn't all to thrilled about the N64 either, but it did have great 1st party titles (Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., Starfox 64, Ocarina of Time, etc.) The limitations of the cart compared to the CD is what made the console not too spectacular. I believe the aim was for children, since it's harder to mess up a cart than it is to scratch up a CD.

Got to disagree - the N64 was all about quality not quantity of games. Some absolute classics and some of the best multiplayer gaming ever. If I am having people over the N64 gets used more than my PS3 for multiplayer. Immense games like Goldeneye, Starfox, Mario 64, 1080 and Zelda made this impossible to put down when you got playing.

I think the point and the aim of this argument is that this console started Nintendo's troubles with THIRD PARTIES. They owned everyone with the NES and some tried to leave to the Genesis only to come back when the SNES won the market back. The N64 got DESTROYED by what should have been nothing but an SNES add-on - the Playstation! Third parties jumped ship and are only now going back, albeit very slowly. They wanted/expected Wii to fail just like the Gamecube, but now they are going back to Nintendo because that's where the money is. All of these consoles are great, but Nintendo historically has strong-armed third parties and they took their revenge on the N64 and Gamecube.....

(I love Nintendo's first party titles, but it is the third party support that has made every console which has come out on top.)

This makes sense now, and i agree with you. Nintendo's first party titles have always been great, innovative and fun.

It was, but ironically it is also one of the most beloved consoles retrospectively . I don't see the PS1 getting the same kind of loving.

yeah but the ps2 played psx games. There was no need to keep a psx after the ps2 came out, and it had some pretty celebrated games. Not as celebrated as the N64, Sony's first party games didn't get to the same calibre as nintendos until the ps2 and later, but some of the best titles of that generation were psx exclusives.

The N64 has more "celebrated" first party games than all three Playstation consoles combined. Obviously they were doing something right.

I absolutely love my N64 to this day. Super Mario 64 is still my favorite game of all time. It was the first game I ever played, and it's still fun. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still, in my opinion the greatest game ever made. Why don't you like the N64? It's awesome!

I would say that the original Playstation had far more good games than the N64. It had one of the best libraries ever and the third parties supported the crap out of it. The reason they don't talk about the PS1 anymore is, as was mentioned before, that people got rid of their original Playstations for PS2's and so people don't look back on the PS1 as much. People need an N64 to play N64 games. You can't say the same for Gamecube games - I have a bunch of Gamecube games and can play them and have never owned a Gamecube. People will forget it too as it was just a footnote between the N64 and the Wii. The Wii will be one of the most remembered consoles in history for better or worse..

I have an original Playstation and PSone, but I'm a collector and I've been trying to get all the great PS1 games lately too. There's a ton... The N64 probably has less than 15...

I think all the faltering happened when Nintendo's "Licensed by Nintendo" sticker on third party games didn't mean s**t. I couldn't believe how many crap games are still flying under the radar.

I agree and I think it began with the N64... every console has bad games but I think they took a major quality dip with their 3rd parties with the N64 and it continues today with the Wii. By far the most 3rd party trash comes out for the Wii in this generation...

I do agree with that, although there were a lot of great games for the 64. I have a hard time trolling through the muck for a good wii game.
