My girlfriend is afraid of rooting her Droid and at this point I've learned not to push her. But I wanted to offer her an alternative the Droid's limited number of home screens.

Would you guys mind listing some home screen replacement APPS (NOT roms) that offer more home screens (I tried a market search but many of the developers neglected to mention this feature before downloading). Which one is the best? Which one will help her minimize her Nexus One envy (yes, I heard about the upcoming update but there was no mention of additional home screens, I dont think).

Thanks for your time. I really appreciate it.

Open Home, Ahome, GDE, Panda Home, those all I believe offer customizable number of homescreens.

I prefer GDE if only because it has a linux like feel to it with cube and stretch like animations, but Open Home is also good.

Yeah I'm a fan of Open Home if you want more homescreens. I would leave it on the default theme though. It's a little laggy on my myTouch but should be fine on the Droid.

Another homescreen replacement app that I LOVE is SlideScreen. This probably won't help you out because it doesn't offer additional homescreens. What it does is offer direct access to Gmail, texts, calls, Twitter, stocks, calendar, weather, etc. Plus it is beautiful and it runs fine on the myTouch meaning that on the Droid it would be smooth as butter. Check it out: http://slidescreenhome.com/

I agree with the statement concerning the SlideScreen, although it does not directly aid with mult. home screens there is a free version to try out so I suggest giving it a quick glance.

Well i would think that the 2.1 update would have the nexus one home screens. i would wait until you have it at least till you make a decision.

You can simply install the "home" application from Android 2.1 (I did it on mine, without any root implied).

You download the file here : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1120771/Launcher2.apk

Then you copy it to the SD card. With either ASTRO file manager, eoeAppInstaller Pro or any other APK manager available on the Android Market, you install it. Next time you press the Home key, a new window will appear. Just check "Use by default" and then click on the new app. You'll have a brand new Home app, official with 5 home screens and a few candy...

And doing a web search, you'll also be able to find other native 2.1 app like "Gallery" (which is awesome!)...

Home++ is what I 've been using and you can have up to 7 screens, plus lots of the basics are included in a scroll bar at the bottom.

I too am afraid to root. How hard is it?What are the risks/benefits?

@MollyWhite:
I understand there is a "one click root" option for the G1 and maybe even the MyTouch, which I would imagine would make it super easy. Maybe someone here can supply you with a link. However, if you have any other phone I'm not sure the "one click root" option will be available to you. You'll also want to make sure to backup your phone to a hard drive (dont know if the "one click root" will include this process).

One of the major risks to rooting your phone is "bricking" your phone (aka making it about as useful as a brick). I'm not sure if backing you phone up will protect against this, or not (although i think it does). The other risk is killing your 1 year warranty.

The benefits include almost limitless versatility with the operating system. Once rooted, people can tweak Android to do so much more than what it currently does. Roms (variations of Android) can be installed to...

-improve the phone's processing power
-tether (use your phone like a wifi modem for your laptop)
-multiple home screens
-voip calls
-software that make it look like other phones (palm pre, iphone, nexus one, etc).

you can look these roms up on youtube.

PS: Forgive me if I was talking down, I hate to assume people know all this jargony stuff. Personally, it took me forever to catch up to the community.

Launcher+ by Intuitit, all it does is add more homescreen, up to 7 actually. There are a few nice features though.

i tried those apps but i didnt like the fact that i couldnt toggle the multi-app thing where the pop up comes and you select the other apps you were using if you had Home or the other apps.
