Fortunately the clever Droid mod developers have ported these updates over to the Motorola Droid. There are a few very good Roms that I would recommend.

Bugless Beauty (by Pete) http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=1391
Bitchin Baegal - SholesMod (by Sholes.info Team) http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=263&t=1168
One really cool thing about the Bitchin Baegal - SholesMod is that it has an SMUpdater (will automatically root from stock and install the ROM for you) making the whole process of rooting much simpler for the average Joe.
These Mods have been out for a while and have proven themselves to be stable and reliable. Both allow overclocking to 950Mhz or 1Ghz at max but there are different levels of overclocking you can choose all the way down to 125Mhz underclocking.
There are also profiles for overclocking / underclocking so in my experience I haven't noticed much change to battery life since my phone is underclocked during standby wich maybe eeks out just a little bit more juice out of the battery to make up for the 950Mhz overclock during normal use.
Also these Roms have Wireless Tether. Wireless Tether is exactly like a Mifi. Essentially it turns your phone into a wireless access point via WiFi for your laptop or any other device. So it just uses the Verizon data connection to share internet via Wifi to any device that uses Wifi and YES you can connect multiple devices to the phone at once! I connected to the internet via wireless tethering at the same time that my friend did on his laptop. He uses a Mac I'm using PC with Windows 7 and it worked like a charm.
Overclocking to 800Mhz is amazing! The Droid really cranks much faster. No lag scrolling and just an overall much faster and more pleasant experience all around with each and every single app and use of the phone. 950Mhz is just icing on the cake beyond 800Mhz. Just truly blazing fast and makes the droid as responsive as a Nexus One easily. It's quite amazing to behold and does so without much fuss or heat during normal use.
In my experience the one thing that will heat the droid up is the Wireless Tethering. Only happens sometimes though...not sure why.
If you overclock, install the "Battery Life" app and turn on the temperature notification just to keep tabs. I don't even look at mine anymore since my phone has never gotten really hot in any abnormal sort of way. Droid still gets hot during GPS Navigation use etc. All that is normal even before overclock.
By the way Google Navigation is so much faster and smoother of an experience with overclock.
Also I recommend the Home ++, home screen replacement. I think it's just the best and really makes sense.
The Bugless Beast / Beauty also include a Camera quality mod that allows video recording at 8Mb / sec which is more than twice the normal video recording rate and apparently improves the quality of recorded videos (albeit larger filesizes).
Truly good stuff out there and anyone wanting to take a dip into rooting their phone for the first time should really take a look at the SholesMod - Bitchin Baegal. It is a far simplified process and you may find it's one that you can handle if your a noob to all this stuff.
I myself am currently using Bugless Beast overclocked to 950Mhz and loving it!
