So, now the Nexus One has been served up native multitouch in the U.S.. Question... why does my DROID, that was sold to me as the ULTIMATE halo Google device, not yet have multitouch? A little crap of Google to do if you ask me. DROID may get it too I suppose, but as of now, no dice. Glad that I rooted mine and did it myself. If Google doesn't serve up multitouch on the DROID I feel like that is sort of a big middle finger to DROID users and Motorola.

Are we sure Google is even to blame here? I would guess that Google controls the Android platform, but who is to say they haven't made this available to manufacturers for whatever they feel like doing. I could be wrong, but my assumption is that since Google is the brand on the Nexus One they are publishing the update, for the Droid it is up to Motorola to make any changes or updates.

Well technically the NExus one is on 2.1, the droid is the only phone on 2.0(which I am guessing Google is not updating since 2.1 is out), so as soon as the Droid goes to 2.1 which they said it would soon, it should have multitouch.

Curious what your source is on "coming soon" thing. I can't seem to find anything that would suggest that. Not that I don't believe you, I am just not aware of anything being said by Google, Motorola, or any one credible.

The coming soon part might be off, but I could have swore I heard them say something about Q1 in some keynote or something like that. They would be stupid to sit by and let the Hero's update a long time before. I think march or late February would be my guess.

Someone from Motorola said the Droid would be getting updated. This was either at CES or the Nexus One announcement event. When? I don't recall if a timetable was given.

You are correct! From the lips of Sanjay Jha himself.

"And don't fret Cliq / Droid users, Jha wants you to know that Android 2.1 is coming to all its Motorola devices including Cliq, and Droid's getting Flash 10.1."

Here's the link to the Engadget article.

The DROID has been designated by Google as a flagship device. It would be pretty poor form for them to shaft Motorola by denying the DROID a 2.1/multitouch update

What about the hero? I think we're still on the upgrade path to 2.0.

I thought it would be up to Motorola to update the Droid once the 2.1 source code has been released?
Droid updates have noting to do with Google.

I think that Motorola and not Google would indeed be the ones to push out the upgrade now that I think about it. The point still stands that both Motorola and Google advertised this device as a halo/flagship device and, I believe, its users deserve the most updated experience.

This is part of the flawed system of Android. If in fact it is %100 up to a Motorola whether they want push out updates or not could reflect very badly on both Google and Android. Google would seem to have no control in that situation over a product that effects them and their appearence directly. I, wrongly, was quick to blame Google right off the bat and I worry that others would do the same. In this instance, I think Apple is smart. A controlled environment where they always know that every update will be available for every user on, in most cases, every device.

Just look at ChazClout. What is the Hero on 1.5... 1.6? Its not but a couple of months older than the droid if I'm not mistaken.

It's not just the phone manufacturer but the carrier as well that will have to approve of the update before getting pushed out to phones.

Between the phone manufacturer and the carrier, the two parties carry most of the delay when it comes to WinMo and Android phone updates.

Also a good point. Despite who is responsible for it though, it would pretty lame of them to cheat DROID users out of the update. I'm not saying they will, I am failry certain that they will, but I am hoping for at least an announcment soon since I have yet to hear anything solid about it yet.

If you want this update that badly you can have it by rooting your phone and going with a ROM from Pete. It's called the Bugless Beast.

http://alldroid.org/viewforum.php?f=210

That's the page to all the different Droid ROM's. Pete will have this in Bugless Beast within a day or two. He's already working on it.

Otherwise, wait patiently till Motorola and Verizon release an official 2.1 update.

My lingering question is whether or not this update also includes a true Multi-touch keyboard. One were you can press a key with one hand and leave it there and then press another key with the other and it still be recognized. This is currently not possible.

Just read that too. Awesome news. I was assuming it was coming and am happy to see that it is. I was really hoping that we wouldn't get glazed over.
