why do we need apps? don't all our phones have apps with a 3g connection to take advantage of? Does anyone think that maybe microsoft should be investing more of its time in making a Zune 5.0 software with better media management. Its behind itunes and media monkey is in this field.

No. Not everybody has a smartphone. Not even most people.

dumb phones are increasingly being phased out now. if you have an iphone, any nokia phone in the last 5years, a htc phone, a blackberry or any android phone, then you have a smartphone.

anyone avoiding all of these products for a dumb phone are going to be doing so because of finance or fear of complicated interface. That sort of person is not gonna plug invest 200+ dollars/pounds on a fresh eco-system and 1st gen touch device.

people who aren't into tech will buy an ipod if they can afford it. only people who are not into tech have basic phones. like my parents for example. they wont have even heard of this device

I love tech, im into tech, mp3 players, computers, game systems. Iv not get a smart phone, my 2 year old nokia is no where near a smart phone its not funny. Id love the zune to have apps, more games, a camera, video recording all that jazz, it would be freaken sweet and i would buy one. As it is i live in Australia and it costs heaps to get a Zune shipped to me so i dont own one. But i want one. An d i would want it to do more then what it already does.

dumb phones are far from being phased out, they're the overwhelming majority and will remain so for quite some time. When you have the privilege of killing time on a gadget blog it may seem that way, but the vast majority of phone worldwide are dumb (Nokia alone swallows up the smartphone market many times over) and that even includes highly plugged in cultures like Japan.

The barrier of entry, particularly in the US, to the smart phone market is the contracted data plan which makes a smart phone a $2000 purchase easily. Trying to compare that as satisfying the sub-$200 PMP market (in the realm of apps) is not really credible.

For those who can afford it, yes, devices are converging, but it's a little trite to say vastly more expensive smart phones (again, including the necessary data plan which lets it be smart) market swallows up even the premium PMP market.

what model Nokia do you have?

First off the Zune is only available in the USA. the architecture of the device doesn't even support European hd radio. so why we are talking about the whole of the world i have no idea.

Second off NOKIA MAKE SMARTPHONES. Just because they have little presence in the USA don't discount them as smartphone makers. Nokia's top of the range consumer smartphone is the n97 at present. that can be gotten for free on a contract for £20 a month. if you cant afford that then you cant afford a zune hd frankly

I'm not familiar with how your price plans work in america but over here the only really expensive price plans come with the iphone. no other phone has excessive payment plans. if you buy a smartphone from two years ago you can pay as little as £15 a month.

My point is that if people who are BIG fans of apps have smartphones usually. And as the Zune is a PREMIUM product, I don't see why we keep coming back to affordability of smartphones. smartphones are cheaper than a zune hd subsidised

I think you can only do so much with media management. Eventually the majority of users will have everything they need and will be looking for something else. Apps fill that gap.

Seriously...the way the Zune HD handles the music is great. I applaud Microsoft for the time they have spent in this area.

Here's the thing, they put a Tegra processor in it. This means that the Zune HD is capable of so much more...and so multi-tasking (currently missing), graphics, games, apps....perfect for this device, while still leaving the music handling in place.

If you're gonna pack something with THAT much punch, then follow it up with apps. And if you only want a music player, than go buy the earlier Zunes.....and trade in your Zune HD. I, for one, expect more apps and more capabilities to be fulfilled.

THANK YOU!!!!! Someone who gets it.

You don't put a Tegra in a device so you can just play music or view a few photos. The Tegra is so underused that it makes the whole thing look half baked.

I'm betting Zune phone at MWC with SDK that will work over both Phone and Zune.

i imported my zune hd with all that power because i could use it as a means of watching video on a tv when i am away from home. i could watch my tv shows or films on any tv with a hdmi port. extremely useful when your visiting your girlfriend and she has lectures for example. if i watch a will and grace dvd one more time i'm gonna slit my wrists.
i end up lying in her bed, getting bored and masturbating furiously until she returns.

My hands are sore. zune is the solution......or the so-lotion....or even better the zu-lution........ZU-LOTION. BRILLIANT!!

the tegra chip is excellent but it takes out 20 seconds to fire up the calculator so lets not pretend like their developers are doing wonders right now. i dont wanna play complex games on a touch screen. just doesn't work that well and any use of an accelerometer on a game makes you look an instant twat on a train. accelerometer gaming reminds me of bluetooth headset - really good provided your alone. use it when your not alone and you'll become alone....and lotion dependent.

I think apps are very useful and fun diversions. Most of them are games anyway. I don't have a smartphone, so I would really appreciate having a decent email app, or youtube video viewer. Plus, phone companies like to gouge when it comes to smartphone services. Apps are a much cheaper alternative. I think the limitation of having to be in a wifi hotspot is pretty good when weighed against all the taxes and fees that could show up on your smartphone bill.

not too sure about the pricing of web access in america but in the uk for an extra £7 on your bill you can have unlimited access to 3G. i am by no means a rich man but i can hack an extra £7 on my bill a month. have one less starbucks visit in the month and you've covered it
