1. Update the firmware on your AP. Just go to the manufacturers' website and follow the prompts, etc.
2. Try to use another channel. Typically, the default is the 1 range. Try 6 or 11. Often, a host of other AP's (all configured with the default channel) can cause interferance.
Next, determine whether it's the AP or the notebook. ie, go to a public WiFi, and see how it goes. If it is instant, focus on the router. If it takes awhile, you could look at the notebook. Could be the NIC, or some OS settings, etc. Did you try connecting other devices to the AP (smartphone, Wii, PS3, whatever)?
