I've been having two serious problems with Windows 7 since the day it was released.

One being that if I try to move content to or from a USB device (external hard drive, PMP, etc.) the process will eventually freeze & become unrecognizable to my computer. None of my USB ports works afterwards. The USB ports will still charge a product if possible, but actually moving data will not work. The only fix I know at the moment is restarting my computer. Which brings me to my next problem.

My computer will not actually restart or shut down, sometimes not even logging off my account. The "Shutting down" phrase will just hang for minutes on in until I have to manually power down my computer. I think it's worth noting that I never had any of these problems with Windows Vista, which is pretty ironic.

Are there any permanent fixes to these problems, or is it just a matter of time before computer completely crashes from all the powering down?

I saw this issue in the Beta and RC on my Dell XPS. Try turning off, unplug the physical power and let it sit for a minute. Plug in and fire it up. Try this before nuking the thing.

I know this isn't a fix but you aren't the only one who is seeing this.

1. Goto control panel/system and security / power options

2. Change power setting.

3. Change advanced power settings

4. Scroll down to USB settings and disable the USB selective suspend setting.

I seem to have a problem with my install, I'm running Professional 64-bit. It seems my laptop hangs when I'm waking it from it's sleep mode or from when the screen turns off. The only thing that fixes it is a reboot, anybody know whats up?

keep in mind that Win7 is brand new. many (not all) of the bugs were addressed and fixed in the betas and release candidates.

i have the full retail version of ultimate 64bit and for the longest time, my nVidia gpu drivers would not allow a certain directX script to execute. i heard a rumor that plugging in a mic would work and it did! can't explain it, but weird stuf happens in seven.

another possibility could be that your motherboard's USB drivers are not vista/seven compatible. go the manufacturer site. also, check your power/sleep configurations. there is an option that will disable usb ports once a system goes to sleep and then wakes up. (similar to post by scotlynhatt)

I'd have to agree with everyone that upgrading to Seven will benefit the speed and some functionality. However, it will not protect you from trojans, viruses, ill developed 3rd party application, hardware and MS bugs. It's nice if you have a spanking new system but you still need to install the applications you once had in vista. Make sure that your applications aren't infected (download from the source) and don't install 3rd party system optimization applications, especially when Seven was just publicly released.

The only problem I've had with Seven was my on-board intel graphics card was not complaint with Aero. Other than that, it's really quick even on a 3 year old centrino notebook. Last tip, always get drivers from the folks who make the hardware.

Alright, I think I finally have it solved. Thanks to the thread that scotlynhatt posted, I was able to find a hotfix that Microsoft put out. Apparently, I fell into a line of computers that were running Windows & 64-bit with 4GB of RAM & an nVidia chip. And so far, the fix is working. I think I have to test it a little bit more, but so far it flawless. Thanks to everyone that responded to my problem!

None of the probs you listed in my copm. I have installed windows 7 professional and I am using my pd as ram boost as well as for data trasfer. And ab't freezing, you gotta need to upgrade your ram as I am having 1 Gb and it works fine.

I have the same problem.
Sometimes my usb mouse and keybord freeze.
Then the only thing I can do is. Remove the powercord out of it's socket.
And wait a minute and then start the pc.
Very annoying.
But I'm going to truy the powersetting from above and see what happens.

I don't have such issue, but sometimes my screen start flickering, and then system restarts.
Maybe due to my video card driver. But working fine with USB, and no other issue, looks quite fine to me.

And much better then VISTA. lets see what happens next and Google is also working hard for OS, this will really compete Microsoft, and will help users for purchasing that costly OS.

anyway Windows 7 is good, i like is overall.

Ok, here is another Windows 7 Issue:

I am have a Lacie external USB drive that shows up just fine in my 'devices' control panel but only as a disk drive (and it asks for an empty disk) when I attempt to open the thing.
It is working, has worked on other computers, but not on my laptop.
Any thoughts?
