Just saw this guide http://phandroid.com/2009/08/04/how-to-gain-root-access-
on-your-htc-hero/
on how to root the hero, on the last step it says "The phone will restart and load the original Android ROM" does this mean that you will lose the HTC Sense UI if I follow this guide?

I desperately want to root my phone but i wouldn't give up the flashy new UI for it, anyone got any thoughts?

When it originally reboots I believe it would go back to stock Android but I guess I don't know. I could see it going back to the Sense UI but it depends on how the UI works...if its just an app sort of thing itll go but if they built it in at a lower level, it might stay.

In theory even if you root it you can still load a Sense UI ROM on to a rooted phone. I do not have a hero but since G1's can run the Sense UI i am sure someone will port the stock ROM with Root if its not already.

Check out this post on XDA-Developers, it details exactly what you need to do.

I've done it and you don't loose any settings or apps at all.

You boot into a recovery image that allows you to change the permission on a file, once thats done you reboot into normal mode and you now have root access.

No flashing just the changing of permissions
