Topic: Micro SD Card to Improve Performance?

I have been reading a few statements made my people who own an HTC Hero regarding the use of a Micro SD card and how a Class 6 card will greatly improve the phone's performance. So, last night I ordered an 8GB Micro SDHC Class 6 card on Amazon. It cost approximately $27 after shipping. I chose the 8GB card because I have a 16GB iPod Touch so all of my music and movies are on that device. The 8BG card on my HTC Hero will only serve to increase the phone's speed/performance and to store apps and photos.

Do you all think that 8GB is enough for what I'm planning on using it for?

I have bought and put in a class 2 16gb card (just read about this today. Still works fine.

So you weren't having any lag problems in the first place?

Also, do you use your Hero to listen to a lot of music?

It will improve audio function and putting the music on their but unless you root it you can't store apps. Class 6 is faster read/write then a class 2. I don't remember the numbers but it is how fast the gadget can read and write to the sd.

Class 6 is a minimum of 6MB/sec, Class 4 is 4MB/sec, and so on. So, since you apparently can't store apps on your Micro SD card, then I'm happy I went with the 8GB because, as I said earlier, I will only be using it to increase the phone's speed/performance and store photos. I have an iPod Touch for music and videos.

Why is it that you can't store apps on the Micro SD card? Pretty stupid, don't you think?

Agreed and you can if you are rooted, Android supports it but the reason i think they didn't is because average someone could very easily brick their phone if they took out the sd card while the phone was running with apps on the card. If they can devise a system where you can safely eject the card with apps on it they might implement it in future updates. All you really need is an ext3 partition but until then unless you root you can't run apps off the card.

I don't plan on rooting the phone. What you are saying makes sense, but a simple warning such as "Do not remove the memory card while the phone is powered on" would be sufficient, don't you think? It's similar to the warning "Do not put your phone in water" haha.

Also, they could always stick the memory card behind the battery. That way, the only way to remove the card would be to remove the battery. That would definitely prevent people from bricking their phones. I know a lot of people don't like that set up, but I never saw what the big deal was. You shouldn't need to keep swapping out the micro SD card in this day and age. You can always transfer files wirelessly to your computer, or, if you can't for whatever reason, buy a really big micro SD card and never take it out.

I agree with you completely but we are in an age were a lot of people aren't that bright. Putting the SD card behind the battery would solve all the problems and hopefully with Flan or beyond they will implement it but by that time I think it will be a mute point since we will probably have Android with 16gb+ internal storage.

What is Flan?

It is the proposed build tree for 2.0+ in theory Donut is 1.6 Eclair is 2.0 and Flan ect is what is beyond that. Cupcake was 1.5 which every Android got in May.

Do you know if Flan, Donut etc. will be Hero-compatible, and if they're planning free updates? Will Sense UI work on top of them?
One thing I hated with WinMo (and PalmOS after a while) is that is you want the new OS you have to buy the new phone... I respect Apple for keeping their older phones updated and refreshed....

It will support it and only because the Sense UI is an app, so all HTC has to do is upgrade the rosie.apk(Sense UI) with the google update and all will be well in theory. Now as for you odd love of apple in an android discussion. How well does 3.0 run on a 2g and will 4.0 even work on 3g. Reviews are mixed on how 3.0 killed functionality on the 3G and the fact that everything is not supported. Android IMO will always be supported because linux is flexible to run on old an new machines. We will see how long that goes but i guarantee no one will have their Android for greater then two years.

iPhone OS 3.0 on an iPhone 3G runs better than Sense UI does on the G1, or the Hero for that matter. It's the nature of the beast. The Android OS in a year will be slow on a year old phone. That's one of the main complaints about the Hero and Sense UI. The experience can be slow.

Well i do agree but i would still rather take a slower Android then fast Apple phone, and with all this banning coming out of Apple it is only a matter of time before they ban themselves, ha, j/k but IMO android will be optimized for every phone, just like linux. You can put the new version of linux on basically any machine without one problem sure it will be slower but it will still run. I have a feeling Android will be the same. Sure by next year the G1 running 3.0 or whatever is out by then will be running slower the out of the box but it will still run. I am running bits of the donut code in my Android and they are slowing working for even faster experience with cgroups and the like. Android will continue to provide optimization along with extra features.

Haha no love of apple, I kinda gave up on them after I had to send back my 40gb ipod 5 times for repair with a sad ipod icon and faulty HDD. And for many many other reasons, I never wanted an iphone.
Very happy with the Android I have to say.
I was just saying how that to me it was the right thing to do (give updates to older models)

Agreed, and your right no apple love and only because they offer me nothing. But anyway I am glad you are happy with android.

I think Apple is great. I got a $200 student discount on my Unibody 15" MacBook Pro and a free iPod Touch.

Also, I purchased my MacBook Pro in August before I started law school (the old MacBook Pro), and it wouldn't burn music to DVDs. It would burn movies to DVDs, but not music. So, I brought it in and they said it was fixed. Well, it wasn't, so I brought it in again. This time, instead of attempting to fix the computer, they gave the brand new Unibody MacBook Pro for free!!!

How nice is that? I think they are a great company.

To each his own, my problem is the price point and a high price point for Style? I could buy two equally powerful HP laptops for the same price or a laptop more powerfull then anything apple offers for less then what apple offers. I guess style and thinness isn't a selling point for me.

I haven't experienced much lag, I installed tons of apps (just counted, 37) and I listen to a lot of music (long train rides so I use the Hero for music, browsing, emailing, tweeting, etc) No problems yet. It did freeze for about 10 secs last night but got back ok afterwards.

FYI I have a unlocked French phone (I hate being locked in plans)

Got it. The rest (Cupcake, Donut, and Eclair) I'm familiar with.

I'm also trying to find a Class 8 Micro SDHC card, but I'm not having any luck...

Oh no I just have a G1 but at one point i ran the Hero ROM and wasn't impressed. I am waiting for the 32gb Micro SD then i will upgrade.

Ah, see I like how Sense UI incorporates everyone's personal information under their contact card, and that you don't have to go on the browser to see their updates. I currently have the Pre, but as I've stated previously I'm returning it and waiting for the Hero.

And by waiting do you mean waiting for the OS to be able to handle a 32GB card?
