Topic: When can HTC has Windows Mobile 7?

The brand new HD2 is about to come to the market pretty soon. However, what stops me from buying it is the slow Windows Mobile 6.5. Even the device is powered by the 1GHz Snapdragon processor, it's still slower than iPhone 3Gs which runs on a 650MHz CPU ( Am I right?)...

So, the question here is, when the HTC HD3 comes out, will it be running the Windows Mobile 7 OS? Will Windows Mobile 7 be MUCH better than the current version?

Everything I've heard from hands on reviews of it, it's very smooth with WM 6.5 The only downside is that it doesn't have a Webkit based browser, but Opera 9.7 and a number of other 3rd party browsers bring new things to the table like support for Flash video, which is a trade off.

I haven't seen any evidence of the HD2 being slower than the iPhone 3Gs. Dont forget that the HD2 runs at more than double the screen resolution of the iPhone ( 800x480 rather than 320x480 ) and inherently multi tasks, so you would be surprised to see it run at twice the speed.

WinMo bashing seems to be en vogue (despite the fact that a many of those bashing WM clearly have never used it!), and to be honest, long over due - 6.1 is fundamentally identical to PocketPC 2003, but the main problems with it really were a result of microsoft leaving it to vendors to customise.
The OS is in fact a complete joy to develop for (Its completely open and free too, unlike the iPhone OS or even Android) - a joy, that is, apart from the inherent lack of consideration of device and screen sizes - there just aren't any standards to comply to.

Its not slow either, its just that as the close button doesn't genuinely close an application, most devices are constantly running more applications than you would on your desktop PC! The other problem with speed was due to complacency by the likes of HTC who released phones (such as my old XDA Orbit 2) without 2D or 3D video drivers installed to save a couple of pence on licensing (the phone had the inactive hardware installed!). It was a PR disaster for HTC and hopefully since the iPhone, HTC and MS have learned to treat users with a bit less contempt!

The HD2 is slower than the iPhone? Do you have a link to a review?

And it should be the 3GS only runs a 600 MHz Processor. And the previous generations only a 412 MHz CPU.

This is just pure speculation but I believe the HD2 might be the first phone to support Windows Mobile 7 (either through update or out of box when it ships to the states). It's pretty fast. If you've seen videos, it's as fast as the iPhone 3GS. I honestly haven't seen a hiccup, but I do remain skeptical a bit because of it's Windows 6.5 nature. The HTC Sense UI almost all but completely takes over the 6.5 UI, and it zooms quickly.

The speed comparison would be interesting - especially with Opera Mobile instead of IE. Opera Mobile running on my S80 9300i very surprisingly frequently outstrips my iPhone 3G with a reasonable 3G connection indicated for the important parts of a page to finish loading. And bear in mind that the 9300i is a GPRS-only phone.

My own guess is that OM on WM on Snapdragon will be more than fast enough. However ultimately it's not the speed of the user interface that interests me more than the actual usability of the user interface, and my jury's certainly out on that as far as the HTC is concerned. My guess is that higher-res screen will go a great deal towards lessening the constant need for multitouch gestures which are fun for the first 30 seconds of iPhone ownership (unless you're *really* easy to please), even though the HD2 doesn't have multitouch AFAIK.

This is one of the few phones I've been genuinely interested in recently, so I hope it delivers more fundamental substance than the iPhone does. I've got it on preorder.

You can probably put a lot of money on the HD2 being one of the beta devices for WM7. There have already been hints of this buried in the official HD2 specs "multi-touch compatible - ready for Windows Mobile Chassis 1". This may not necessarily mean that a WM7 upgrade for the HD2 will be released, but HTC have released non minor upgrades at some moments in the past.

I believe it will be the first, or one of the first Windows Phones to get a Windows 7 refresh. the HD2 does meet all of Windows 7 Chassis requirements.

How would anyone know if you're right when the phone hasn't been released in ANY markets yet? No one has this phone yet. There are no reviews yet. You know nothing about this phone.

Also, WinMo 7 isn't anywhere near release and probably won't be that much more spectacular than 6.5 judging by what Ballmer has been saying about it.

NO PHONE FOR YOU!

yeah, not only do I agree in that people should never make ultimate comparisons until they try the devices, but you can't compare two very different processors by their clock speeds as far as phones go.

Microsoft should just sell Winmo to HTC so they can finish it i mean HTC has done more with winmo then Microsoft has yet accomplished.

People have the phone already, they give out quite a few for "testing and review" that is where the leaked pictures and videos come from. Also not sure what HD2 ArmpitOfDeath is talking about because this HD2 has multitouch

I will buy an HD2 as soon as I can get some sort of concrete evidence that it will receive an upgrade to windows phone 7. Specs seem right although it doesnt have a dedicated search button per requirement im sure one of the other buttons can be used as such like the home or dial button. I dont think much information has been released about this yet though. I was hoping to hear from tmobile at MWC regarding this.
