I've only been using the Nexus One for a few days, but let me tell you, the ability to use voice for text input in any field is one of the most amazing things about this phone. I'd still prefer to have a real qwerty keyboard (which will hopefully come soon), but the voice recognition is so good that it makes it a lot easier to get by without it.

Seriously, one of the best things about this phone.

Heh, I am going to take full credit for turning Peter on to this feature! I totally agree though, it's pretty freaking good. Not perfect, but way better than any speaker independent voice recognition system I've seen.

We have seen a lot of good voice recognition lately, Ford Sync and stuff, and now all text entries on Android. 2010 might not be the year of the so-called tablet after all, but the year of ACCURATE voice recognition.

There must be endless possibilites too.

Agreed on the voice recognition working so well. I've only tried it with the wifi (on 3g or EDGE), but it's been very good. Still want physical keyboard. If I could put the N97 keyboard on this phone... sweet.

I've actually found myself speaking to the phone for text input having forgotten to press the microphone button first, it's that natural.

It is very exciting to see voice recognition (and TTS) to finally become mainstream. Speech technology seems to be popping up everywhere: Nexus One, iPhone, Kindle, Ford Sync, etc. I have worked on Speech Recognition research for more than a decade but I love that I can now just buy random gadgets that have speech technology built in.

Peter, have you tried the Dragon Dictation app on the iPhone? I have a German accent and for me that works better than the Nexus One feature. Full Disclosure: I am one of the developers of that app... :-)

I haven't tried it, but only because I don't own an iPhone (check my gadget list, it's true!). I have heard from others who aren't native English speakers that Google's voice recognition is problematic. I assume that's something that will improve with time, but I'd guess that any app that you can train (like Dragon Dictation) will always give you better results.

I am sure both Google's system and Dragon Dictation adapt to the speaker over time in the background. Neither supports explicit training (enrollment).

For my comparison I actually picked up a development iPhone that I don't usually use. My personal iPhone has obviously adapted to my accent over the last 6 months, so that wouldn't be a fair test.

I will see whether the Nexus One improves for me over time.

Interesting, I just assumed that Google's wasn't adapting on a per user basis, though I suppose that would make sense!

However the dictation is being handled in the cloud, so does Google reference your settings each time it does a dictation on its servers? I personally don't think so, but I would love to hear from Google on this.

Yes, this would be good to know.
I suspect that it is *not* adapting to me.
I have an English accent and my pronunciation of certain words with prominent "T"s give it trouble!
