I am wondering because I plan to move abroad and just want to use it as a phone overseas instead of buying some shitty phone like I ended up doing last time I was abroad.

So, will it work without an internet plan? I know for my G1 I had to sign in the first time I used the phone with my gmail account. I never experimented with it by shutting off my internet service to see if the phone would still work.

I know the point of buying this phone is to use all the internet related functions basically, but I would like to use it until I leave and when I get back.

Probably. My wife's old G1 works okay with my non-data SIM in there and also works fine Wifi-only. The only catch was getting past the 1st time setup wizard. I had to put her SIM in there for that.

Yes, it works without a data plan. I use AT&T and sometimes just wifi without the SIM in the N1.

As long as you don't have your APNs configured, you'll be OK. Actually, without the permanent 3G connection, you'll gain battery life, I'm sure.
