This weekend i wanted to get a Nexus One. I'm currently a very satisfied Tmobile customer (the only one?), 17 months in a 2-yr contract on a family plan.

So i checked the tmobile website to see if i was eligible for a handset upgrade. it turns out that i can get any phone for the same price a new customer would get. Great!

I went to the Nexus page to buy the phone subsidized (with new 2-yr contract) in turns out:
1. I can't get the phone because i'm on a family plan. WTF?
2. I'm not eligible for the upgrade price until month 22 of my contract. WTF?
3. I'll never be eligible for the new customer pricing. i'll have to pay 280 instead on 180 for new customers. WTF?

Who does Google think they are to impose such restrictions? Maybe i should just get an iphone?

Like you I love Tmobile and will likely never switch to anyone else. First off, Tmobile is not, NOT selling this phone, they are only supporting it. Really since Google is selling the phone, Tmobile doesn't have to give you any discount. The family plan thing is why I haven't gotten one yet either, and sorry to say but it has always been 22 months for a full upgrade any less gives you a partial upgrade. There is a chance the equivalent HTC phone will make it to Tmobile here shortly, I believe the X-10 is also coming which is spec'd nearly the same. Plus there is always the chance that the Nexus one will hit store shelves, and if it does any plan and upgrade discount will be honored.

And if you are planning on staying on Tmobile, and want an Iphone, your going to end up paying more for it since you have to buy an unlocked version which is upwards of $1000. So that seems pointless.

Just for reference, the Nokia N900, is unlocked and only works on Tmobiles 3G network yet you do not get the option to subsidize it you just have to pony up the cash. At least this is a step in the right direction for how phone companies will work but its its still got some bugs.

Yeah this is going to be an issue for me as well. I'm only in month 7 of my contract and there are already a couple phones that I have my eye on. I don't even know if I'm eligible for ANY upgrade pricing, let alone a new customer discount. I hope that if I end up getting a phone like the Nexus One, TMo will allow me to keep my plan. It's an individual plan and I get discounts for being a full-time student. We'll see how that goes.

And getting an iPhone on TMobile or switching to AT&T just seems like a regrettable idea. If you seriously want to think about that, wait until June when the next iPhone comes out. I bet it will be pretty slick and a lot of people are hoping for the return of the metal case instead of the cheap plastic back it has now.

You could always get an unlocked Nexus One and keep your plan and that might end up paying for itself because you wouldnt have the price hike on the monthly bill. I know I am paying $65/month for unlimited web, texting, and 300 minutes, so going up to $80/month kind of a big switch over a year or two.

I think with all this confusion that is caused with the pricing with T-Mobile, Google should just bite the bullet and let T-Mobile support it and sell it. They aren't doing anything revolutionary by selling it direct, it's been a big misstep for them. People want to see phones in person before they plop down the cash and the way Google is working this model, it's not happening.

I've been holding off on purchasing this thing, so that Google/HTC/T-Mobile fix all the issues with it.

Yeah, I think as of right now, this model is more of a hassle than it needs to be. I don't mind buying the phone through Google, but the lack of plan options is kind of annoying.

I'll probably buy the unlocked one if anything, just so that I could keep my plan and not extend my contract. I'm still hoping that a sexy HTC phone will come out sans trackball. Honestly. I NEVER use it on the myTouch.

Yeah, it's just an extra step that's preventing customers to even wanting the thing and no one likes going through multiple lines just to not get the right answer.

I might do that, but I'm waiting to see what shows up at MWC before shelling out the cash. I'm hoping Nexus One internals with a full QWERTY keyboard myself.

The trackball is basically useless, I'm not sure if it's just a legacy as to why they're keeping it, since you can navigate fine without even touching the trackball.

There keeping it because some people like trackballs, I thought it would be nifty to have one when I got my G1 and now, I won't make that mistake twice. Thats probably the best part of the G1, a couple of months of use and you know what you want it a smartphone from factor. I found that a qwerty is moot for me and that a trackball is nice but, I'd rather have an optical pad, and I'm fine without ether.

The support issue should be mostly fixed now that Google added phone support.

Also can't wait for MWC.

I have an Eris, not a Nexus One, so it may not be the same, but I find the trackball useful for one thing: editing text. If I have written a text message or email (really, anything in a text box) and find that it autocorrected a word that I didn't want corrected, trying to place the cursor by pointing is hit-or-miss. The trackball is very useful in that case.

I don't understand why people are so upset over this. Why would you want to do an upgrade at all? Subsidizing your phone sucks. Just buy the phone at the full price, go with a T-mobile "Even More Plus" plan. Your bill will be $20 LESS EACH MONTH (making the Nexus One cheaper over the course of 2 years than buying it with a subsidized plan). AND you don't have to be in a contract anymore!

So lets look at this again:
1. It's actually cheaper over the course of 2 years to buy the phone at full price.
2. If you buy it at full price you don't have to be in a contract at all.
3. If you buy it at full price you can be on whatever plan you want to be on, individual, family, whatever.
4. If you are currently in a contract, you can buy it out or wait for it to expire, that's what you agreed to, get over it.

So who are Google to impose such horrible restrictions on you? Oh just the one company taking on the horrible U.S. phone subsidizing crap and trying to convert it into the European model, which is much better for consumers.

The 'Even More Plus' plan doesn't make sense for a family. You want us to buy 2 Nexus one for 1060$?
How long will it take to break even?

I agree that i'm in a contract, but what about phone upgrades? On any contract you can upgrade your phone before 2 yr. (some carriers allow phone upgrades every year).

Finally, when was the last time you kept your phone for 2-yrs?

'Even More Plus' family plans work fine for people like yourself who already own 2 working T-mobile phones. I never said you should buy 2 phones. Again you seem to be tying your phone ownership with your wireless service contract, where Google is trying to separate these 2 things.

What about phone upgrades? "On any contract you can upgrade your phone before 2 yr". Fine. You can certainly go into T-mobile and upgrade to any phone they sell. But T-mobile doesn't sell the Nexus One! Google Does! It's like you could get an upgrade discount if you traded your Ford car in for a new Ford car. But you don't want that. You want that trade in discount on a new Chevy. And you are complaining because Ford won't give it to you by saying "but they drive on the same roads".

If you are upset about the Nexus One upgrade policy, then I would say that Google is being VERY generous offering any upgrade policy whatsoever on the Nexus One. Sorry it's not to your liking but they are actually being very nice about it by working with T-mobile to provide SOME upgrade plan.

These are unlocked phones, and Google could have just sold them online unlocked at full price and been done with it. They didn't have to provide any sort of upgrade policy. There is nothing in your relationship with Google that says they should honor the contract you have with T-mobile. Complaining about this is like complaining that the unlocked European HTC Hero that I can buy on Newegg.com and use on T-mobile is a horrible deal because T-mobile isn't subsidizing it for you.

The Nexus One isn't sold by T-mobile. It's sold unlocked by Google. It's not bound by any of the contract rules you have currently with T-mobile. The fact that there is any upgrade or subsidizing option available at all is just Google being nice. If you really don't like it, wait for the HTC Bravo to come to T-mobile, or get an iPhone. But then you'll be just as upset when the next iPhone comes out and AT&T won't give it to you for the same price as a new customer.

I don't agree with you: the Nexus one is sold unlock but it only works with tmobile (3G). So basically the phone IS tied to tmobile. Maybe i don't have a contract but i can't use the Nexus one on at&t to it's full potential, so if i leave tmobile my phone is 'useless'.

So just because the 3G band will only work on T-mobile (or any European service provider) (note it will also work on AT&T, just not with 3G) that makes Google the same company as T-mobile? How can you disagree with me that buying a phone directly from Google isn't the same as buying a phone from T-mobile?

Also, if you leave T-mobile, your Nexus One isn't useless, it's actually worth quite a bit on ebay. And since it's unlocked you can sell it!

But honestly I think you need an iPhone. I hear they cater well to people who are incapable of logical thinking.
