My oldie dv1000 has turned 5 this summer and it's still alive and kickin'!

I've bumped up the RAM to 2GB since I've got it and now I'm running Linux Mint 7 instead of XP.

I absolutely love it and I am not planning to replace it till it dies.

Barely making it at this point....part of it is that I haven't updated the RAM in 5 years, so it's running off 750MB. I wonder what it would be like to update to 2GB? But every once and a while, the wifi just fails without explanation, so I'm hesitant to invest any more money in it (especially when there are netbooks on offer for just a couple hundred dollars)

Doubling the RAM should boost the performance. And regarding your WiFi problem, I suggest taking the card out and then putting it back in again -- maybe it's just dodgy connection.

I recently took my laptop apart completely (http://twitpic.com/dwspj) to change CMOS battery. I have also cleaned the dust and after reassembling, it really started working much better.

However, I think my HDD is starting to fail. S.M.A.R.T. shows 300+ instances of the same error and if I start a torrent program together with backup program (both work HDD quite hard) it gets so slooow.

Anyway, I think if I replace HDD, and they are cheap nowadays, I'll manage to push at least another year from my oldie dv1000 :)

Have the dv1331se with increase to 2GB RAM still running XP. Ran 7 beta for a couple weeks but went back. Its tough little laptop but its not ready for Win 7. I'll be retiring mine when Win 7 officially hits shelves.

Interesting, because I ran Vista on my laptop when it only had 1 GB of RAM and it worked just fine. Windows 7 is supposed to be less resource intensive than Vista, so it should work in theory.

I think you should definitely try at least Windows 7 RC.

Bought one for myself and one for my daughter 5 years ago. I had to replace her hard drive and had to reload the OS a couple times on hers also but mine is solid... hmmm user experience might actually be related to the user.
