Installation with Winimage goes well until 99% Then i get the message; "error reading file chrome-os-0.4.22.8-gdgt.vmdk.zip"

Am I doing something wrong? I have also tried to unzip it. Moreover I treid to install on a usb and on a SSD card. On the SSD card it will not even start.

Please help, since I really would like to use Chrome OS on my EEE 901

Try unzipping the file first to get the chrome-os-0.4.22.8-gdgt.vmdk file. Then try copying it to the USB or SD card. Note, you need to use a 4GB or larger USB or SD card.

so if you just copy the .vmdk file to the USB drive it will boot? thought you had to use
the winimage first to make it bootable/etc?

But my findings is for some reason Winimage is reporting the progress of the Operation all the
way until 100%, even says complete, but nothing was actually done to the usb drive?

Ok Maybe I am dumb?

To run Chrome OS, you need to have Linux Installed?
(Not sure why, but I heard this before, but then read this way to install/run on a usb) so was thinking you did not
need to have Linux installed?

Yes, you need to use WinImage to copy the .vmdk file to the USB drive to make it bootable. It will appear that the USB drive has nothing on it under Windows.

No, you do not need to have Linux installed. There are instructions for installing the image under Linux. Note, Chromium OS is based on Linux.

well I guess I got 2 options:
1) Keep trying!, maybe with another USB Flash drive, like a 8GB, instead of a 4GB.
(and yes should of known, under winblows it would act like nothing is on the drive)
Though even with doing that, it still boots into windows(I mean with setting up it to boot via usb drive)

I wonder if you could use another imaging software to copy it onto a usb drive, instead of Winimage?

will keep trying for a while, then maybe go to step 2...

2) Run it under Vmware or equivalent(Virtualbox)

Try pressing ESC as the computer boots, that should bring up a list of the bootable drives. Make sure you click on the USB drive. If the Gdgt file isn't working, try the "diet" version from:
http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

It is smaller and will fit one a 1GB device.

Well the "Esc" does not seem to work, Have tried it several times. So I just go into the BIOS to change the BOOT UP, though maybe that is not working either.
Shrug.
I have been hitting ESC many times before it goes to boot, hmm oh wait? maybe if when you Hit F2 to get the setup part, before going into that, maybe if you hit ESC it will show a boot menu.
Just thought of that, worth a shot.

well got the ESC thing to work and am on Chromium OS now as I am
typing. Its different/etc, but very cool and has lots of potential.
I did exactly what I posted, got to the point where it shows the key to press for setup, then pressed it and pressed esc key...

Well I love it...Though MAIN deliema is how to reboot Chrome OS or Shutdown?

To sleep, just close the lid. To shutdown, press the power button or use Ctrl-Alt-T to open a terminal window and enter 'sudo shutdown -h now' use "chronos" as the sudo password for the Gdgt build or "facepunch" for Hexxeh's build.

Thanks, now I just have to wait for it to download.
Will it work with an Acer Aspire R1600? Intel Atom 230 with 1GB DDR2 RAM and 160 GB HD. I also know it can boot from USB drives.
Also, would I have to use a wired keyboard, since I am currently using a wireless one?

my 701 PC 4G loves it, EXCEPT it won't pick up the webcam. If the drivers for that would work, I'd be full time Chromium.
Next step is to try it on an SD insteard of a USB so it doesn't have a 'snappable' sticking out.

I tried both, the Gdgt and the Hexxeh build on my 1011HA. Both are incredibly slow. Even booting with grub from the HDD, it takes like 5 seconds, until clicking on the screen has any effect!

But wifi works... maybe the grafic chip is not supported?

Anyone got WiFi working on a 1000HE yet? If so, what did you do?
