It's working for me with no changes. I'm running the ChromeOS and actually writing this in that OS. My host is OSX 10.6.2 running VMWare Fusion 3. I just downloaded the vmdk, created a new VM and used the existing vmdk. I changed network access to bridged and it is working fine. It does work as described, at least for me.
Good Luck

"To use the vmdk file, open VMware and create a new virtual machine. One of the options will be to use an "existing virtual disk."

I've downloaded VMWare Player, and spent 30 mins looking for this "use existing virtual disk" option. It's not where it's described, and I can find no way of getting it to look for or open recognise the vmdk file. Only options seem to be ISO files.

How do you open a vmdk?

This statement is wrong. This option doesn't exist.

This is how I got it to work with the image that Gdgt is providing and the VMWare Player currently available for free download from VMWare's site...

1) Create a folder on your C drive called Virtual Machines

2) Download the Chromium image from Gdgt and extract the VMDK file to c:\Virtual Machines

3) Download and Install VMWare Player

4) In VMWare Player...
a. Select "Create a New Virtual Machine"
b. Select "I will install the operating system later" and click the Next button
c. Under Guest Operating System select Other and under Version select Other and click the Next button
d. Under Virtual Machine Name enter "Chrome OS" and under Location browse to the c:\Virtual Machines folder you created above and click the Next button. [Note: This will be the downloaded VMDK file and the newly created blank Virtual Machine in the same folder]
e. On the Specify Disk Capacity page leave defaults as they are and click the Next button.
f. On the Ready to Create Virtual Machine page click the Finish button.

5) Navigate to the c:\Virtual Machines folder in Windows Explorer.
a. Rename Chrome OS.vmdk to Chrome OS.vmdk.old
b. Rename chrome-os-0.4.22.8-gdgt.vmdk to Chrome OS.vmdk

6) On the VMWare Player main screen select Chrome OS and click Play Virtual Machine [Note: This will show the OS logon screen]

7) In the bottom right hand corner of the VMWare Player window right click on the Network Adapter Icon and click Disconnect then select Settings.

8) On the Virtual Machine Settings window on the right hand side under Network connection select Bridged and then click the OK button.

9) In the bottom right hand corner of the VMWare Player window right click on the Network Adapter Icon and click Connect

10) On the OS logon screen enter your Google e-mail address as your username and your Google password as your password.

Enjoy!

If you're using VMWare and not VMWare Player, creating a new virtual machine using an existing virtual disk is an option and works just fine.

I've gotten the Chrome OS to run on a Dell Latitude E5400 running Windows XP. I used Sun VirtualBox and followed the instructions but did have to open the VirtualBox Network adapter and check the box for VirtualBox Bridged Network Adapter. Apparently the adapter defaults to host only but must be changed to work.

to change the screen resolution do the following: (instructions are from a Mac so the commands may be different for you PC folks for the keyboard short cuts) Press Conrol+Option+T this will open a terminal window. in the terminal shell type: "/usr/bin/xrandr --size 1280x960" (without the quotes) and boom your resolution is no longer 800x600

What a waste of disk space. A web browser that has its own OS who's only function is to quickly display the browser.

Fail.

This is bulls**t. Nice try, but major fail. There's obviously more going wrong than just the "bridged vs. NAT" networking setting. Oh well....that was 20 minutes I'll never get back. Thanks gdgt. I'll wait for Google to compile a binary.

Eh... I suppose that many claims such as this will come. Don't worry, the problem will be fixed. By another version, you say? Damn no! By another distro! Something less than 80 megabyte and with the same functionality, supporting all existing virtual machines and USB installation, is coming soon. Just give me a week or even less ;)

This isn't an OS, it's still just a base browser at this point. Don't waste your time setting up a virtual machine in VMware or VirtualHost. From reading different articles online about this system, it's going to be a basic Google Chrome Browser Interface where you'll have access to E-Mail and the Web. That's all i got so far.

For them to say this is an OS release is very disappointing from Google.

Well ........... I have downloaded the image and it works but I cant see the goal with this amputated linux distro.
It has to be the joke of the decade . An "nlited" xp or windows 2000 image is far smaller and install crome and you have something ten times better , even a light Linux distro would be a 100 times better . At least you have access to the OS system. This is just another step towards Google´s "We decide whats good for you"
I hope its not final , otherwise the funeral will happened before the birth of this fairytale which you might call "The Emperor's New Clothes"

I had problems with the download. I'm using OS X 10.6.2 running iGetter, the download wouldn't finish. I tried several times.

I finally bootcamped over to Windows 7, got the full download, unzipped it and threw the vmdk into dropbox.

Once I had the file I used these instructions to install in Virtual Box:

http://chrometecha.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-to-install-c
hrome-os-in-virtualbox.html

I did see the network setting should be bridged in this forum, I also used the chrometecha suggestion tho set the type of Linux at "Other 2.6".

My gmail worked as the login. It booted up immediately and works great.
