Too bad you can't get the screaming deal that Dell had for these about 2 months ago. Got mine with stock 512MB mem and 8GB SSD for only $200. Upgraded to 2GB mem and 32GB SSD for

Apparently the last bit o' my post was cut off...

The reason I posted in this section is that, I wanted to make note of the 32GB SSD. You have to beware of the fact that not all PCI-E SSD will work in this Dell Mini.

Only the Half Mini PCI-E will work, got mine from

Still not unbelievably blazing fast, but better than having to squeeze into that 8GB.
Oh yeah, I went with XP to start, and Fedora 9 as the 2nd.

I just got one of these from work. Comes with 1gb RAM and 16GB HD, I believe. How easy is it to upgrade the RAM? The HD space doesn't concern me much, but I'd love to make it a bit speedier.

Does Dell outlet still offer these? I could buy one in a paycheck...

There are Mini9's available on the outlet. Also keep in mind that the Vostro A90 is the EXACT same thing. So Mini9/A90 either are fine for a great netbook...and i suppose hackentosh if thats your thing : P

Sorry for the Triple post up there. Eddie, but the Vostro is more expensive, right?

Don't remember specifically but I recall there being less options if you were to configure it on the site. So I think for those options it was about the same as the mini9, its just that you could nerf the mini9 more with the intention of upgrading and spend less.

I upgraded the ram to 2Gb. On the 16 Gb SSD I shrunk the windows xp partition using GParted and installed LinuxMint with LXDE as the window manager. Great extra laptop for couch surfing and light document work.

Also Hackintoshed it. 16GB Runcore SSD. 2 GB ram. Swapped out wireless for an 802.11N Airport extreme card (i was having trouble with the default Dell one powering off randomly). Runs 10.5.7 perfect.

This is a solid 10 out of 10 people. The onyl thing that could be better is maybe the speakers.

I am dual booting Windows 7 and Linux Mint 7. Added 2gb RAM and a 32gb Runcore SSD and the thing is as fast as it's every going to be. No lag in Win 7 ultimate which is nice. Runs better than XP even.

Make sure to also upgrade the keyboard. Call Dell customer service and ask for the US International Keyboard. It's 100x better than the one that ships.

I honestly don't think a netbook of this size could be any better! I recommend the Mini 9 to anyone who asks.

The Dell Mini 9 is a champ... for what it is. Works great for surfing, streaming, and very kid friendly. My kids live playing with the web cam. Windows 7 works great. Battery live is ok if you're not needing to use it for more than a few hours.

Installed OSX to turn this laptop into a hackintosh. It runs great, battery life is amazing especially for just couch surfing. It has quickly turned into the most popular computer in the house, someone is always "just looking something up"!

Are there any big advantages to the newer 10 version? Also, can the 10 run OSX as seamlessly?

Thanks!

The Mini 10v will run OSX... the 10 WILL NOT!

Other than that, about the only thing they changed other than making it a bit bigger is that the 10 doesn't use an SSD it uses a 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive. A plus if you like the larger space, a minus if you don't like moving parts.

The Mini 9 is no longer in production, so your only options is a referb or a Vostro A90 (almost the exact same laptop, it runs OS X great)

I normally dislike Dell with a passion however the Mini 9 is brilliant for modding projects. You can change most things in it and it all just works. Fair play to Dell for making something for us all to play with - even if they didn't do it on purpose!

2GB ram 32GB RunCore SSD -Windows RTM is like butter.

As far as the tinny speakers go, I'm trying to use the EQ built into WMP to account for the lack of range with decent results..

I have a small set of speakers that I can use in a pinch but it's cumbersome as opposed to simply playing the movie without having to set stuff up, so a little tinkering may go a long way.
