Does the Nook connect using AT&T's EDGE service, or only 3G? I live in one of the many areas that AT&T does not have 3G ... although they promised 3G by the end of this past summer ...

I can confirm that even though it says it will work on Edge, I have never successfully had the phone work on non-AT&T EDGE networks.

So all the "partner coverage" areas of the AT&T Data Coverage Map have been Dead Zones for me... even when friend's AT&T iPhone works in EDGE and my T-Mobile phone works.

There's no way AT&T would just limit it to 3G. There's not even a need for 3G speeds when it's just text. The Kindle uses Sprint EVDO and books arrive in a couple seconds. We're talking 200K, maybe 500K for Bible-length books.

That's what I was thinking - but I have not read anywhere where EDGE is an option ... it's all been 3G in the reviews.

Ideally the device would offer the user the option to fall back on Edge in case there's no coverage. Like cellphones do.

This should answer your question:

""The 3G network seems to be the most popular network so a lot of times wording for nook's capabilities will only make reference to 3G and Wi-Fi. However, nook more specifically works with 2G-3.5G wireless technology."

So if you have 2G, nook will work, and you're good to go, albeit at somewhat slower speed. But so what. "

So, YES, it WILL work on EDGE.

It's not "just" text. There a good number of other binary transfers going on: login, updates, small images, encrypted connections, license validation, etc. While each of those individually might be very small... they add up very quickly (especially over a cellular network). It does sound like the Nook will work with Edge but I, for one, would only use that when I absolutely "had" to. :)
