Topic: How is this for roleplaying PDFs?

Specifically the Pathfinder core rulebook. The physical rulebook is some 570 pages and weighs 5 pounds! It's also a pain to constantly flip through.

So how does the nook handle term searches and page indexing for PDFs (1.6)? I don't think the absensce of color will be an issue. The pdf is 90MB and it would be nice to be able to just type in the page and have it show up fairly quickly and then be able to zoom into specific parts.

And if there are other books like the bestiary, would it be too much of a hassle to close one PDF and open another PDF (about the same size)?

Also, does anyone know how the Kindle would fare in the same sitaution?

Cheers.

I just got my Nook on Sunday so I'm still getting used to it but, ironically I do have the pathfinder PDF and I have added it to my Nook. It works, occasionally, sort of, but it still has a long long way to go before I would say it is usable. PDF support leaves alot of room for improvement. Now I haven't tried a PDF specifically purchased from Barnes and Nobles so maybe they are better. Obviously, I still have some experimenting to do but I'll be happy to share anything I find. I will say that so far I really love my Nook.

P.S. I have had some success converting other PDFs to epub format and getting them to work on the nook so I am going to try that with the Pathfinder rulebook when I get home from work.

What exactly do you mean by "it works, occasionally, sort of?" Is it solely a formatting issue, or is there something else wrong with the PDF support? I've never looked at a Pathfinder rulebook, but I'd imagine there could be a lot of formatting issues in having to shrink down the page formatting to the nook's screen size.

If the pdf is a full page image rather than text then you will have difficulty using the nook for your rulebook. The nook handles the pdf text fine, but there is no way to resize an image (zoom in and out) nor is there a way to pan (up down left or right) if it were zoomed in.

Hope that helps you.

While I like my nook, it does not replace a good notebook computer for working with PDFs. The nook is never going to be speedy, and I'm guessing that you might find annotating PDFs useful . . . and that is not something you are going to want to do with a nook.

Like all dedicated ebook readers to date, the nook is pretty much a single purpose tool. What it does, it does well. However, moving beyond ePub formatted content to PDFs is something that it struggles to do. In addition to the previously mentioned problems with images in PDFs, it also doesn't like PDFs with tables, columns, or any highly formatted text (like large multi-level outlines).

Having searched through large PDFs like the D&D Players Handbooks and Monster Manuals, I can tell you right now it's not a quick experience. I love my nook, but this is one area it doesn't shine. It's great for reading, not for searching through books. It would be nice if the searching experience was better, but for things like the Bible, RPG PDFs, and anything else that might be more then a handful of pages, it's not great.
