Hi guys,
Just a quick note to let you know that firmware 1.2 is out now.
I even got a pleasant surprise when I turned on my Nook to proceed with the manual update, it had received the OTA update. The reason this was such a shock to me is that I live in Australia, and had presumed that the OTA updates would be restricted to those in the US, but I guess it downloaded the update via WiFi.
So far the few things I have noticed at that the home screen LCD icons have been redesigned with rounded corners, the menus now have a slight metallic/gradient to them and the LCD fades in and out instead of just going blank or appearing, and my clock is finally correct.
The notes I read on Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5465022/full-details-on-the-new-nook-
12-firmware-going-out-now) mention a lot of general improvements, but I haven't really noticed anything specific, nor did I think there was anything majorly in need of improving in the first place.
If you haven't got the OTA update, head over to http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/support/#software
Cheers,
Decipher.

I was about to ask if there was a way to tell if a nook was running 1.2 and its looks like the redesigned touchscreen home icons are a dead giveaway.
Unfortunately, this is saddening because I just tried out a nook at a B&N retail location running 1.2 and was dissapointed with the speed of the device. There is still noticible lag between tapping on the touchscreen and any sort of feedback or action taking place. Things like tapping the "down" key or even the "n" home button take a while for something to happen.
I really like the design and principle behind the nook but for $260 its a hard sell in its current state.
I know the first thing I'd do if I got one would be to re-buy all my favorite books (around 20 or so) so entry fee for me is quite high. Not a nook's fault, but I'm just such a collector. I think I'd also end up buying both hardback and ebook versions of books I really like. On second thought, maybe an e-reader is not for me...
I wish hardcopies came with a digital version. Movies have started to do it so I hope books follow suit. I'd buy that.

I had previously considered Rooting the device to set the time, and was again while writing this, but I took a few seconds to check if 1.2 brought any new settings for the clock, and what do you know, they have. You can now set your timezone and correct any clock issues you might be having :) This alone has to be the best new feature of 1.2
