Topic: Middle Button click "hack"

Here is a program that enables a "middle click" function (it is for the macbook's trackpad but also works on the Magic Mouse):

http://clement.beffa.org/labs/projects/middleclick/

Open the program and it will enable a 3 finger tap on the shell to work as a middle click [ you don't have to physically click the button ].

It apparently works only for Snow Leopard, but I tried it on an iMac G5 running Leopard and it has worked well so far.

Hope this helps.

Add tons of functionality, including middle click. Enjoy

http://vladalexa.com/apps/osx/magicprefs/ is really what you want to be using if you have this mouse. Configure whatever action you want for taps, clicks, drags, pinches, etc, with any number of fingers... very powerful.

Nice find! I've had a few people ask if there was a way to enable middle clicking on the Magic Mouse.

Ah, this is very cool. So this is tap only? Or does actually depressing a full click with three fingers act as a middle click, too?

Apparently it works only by tapping it; I tried clicking but it is registered as a left click.

I wrote a version that uses a three finger click instead of a three finger tap:
http://github.com/galonsky/MiddleClick/downloads

Still has some bugs, I'm sure. For example, you will have to restart MiddleClick after reconnecting your Magic Mouse for now.

Thanks for your work, 3 finger click works great —and much better than the tap.

Works great galonsky - I'd love to hack around a bit, would you mind sharing the source for your modification?

this is a cool piece of software, unfortunately the fact that you have to restart MiddleClick when you reconnect the magic-mouse is pretty annoying, I always forget ;-) Any timeline to fix this?

Thank you so much! This application just made my life so much easier! Up until today, I've had to switch between my old USB mouse and the Magic Mouse for scroll click and speed reasons, but this app along side MouseZoom is finally letting me throw the old USB mouse in the closet! I'll be keeping an eye on the about page for any updates. Thanks again! :-)

Was totally excited for this. Just downloaded it and ran it on OS X (10.6.1).

Safari 4.0.3 (6531.9): Doesn't work.
Firefox 3.5.5: Doesn't work.
Chromium 4.0.232.0 (30801): Doesn't work.

I noticed a lot of people in the thread on that site seemed to have gotten it to work. Any hints or tips on how to get things working? Totally want to re-enable middle click!

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro unibody. When I tap the trackpad with 3 fingers, it does open a new tab. But nothing happens while using the Magic Mouse.

I've bought mine today.... i've tested the three tap funcion in the Apple Store in a brand new iMac, and it works fine. On My Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on a MacBook Pro 15.4 not unibody does NOT work too.

I am using a macbook running OS X 10.6.1 as well, I tried it on Safari (4.0.3) and Firefox (3.5.5) and it worked ok.

Are you getting any kind of input when you tap it with 3 fingers?

I don't know if this is the problem you are having, but when I tried it on a 10.5 system, it automatically opened Exposé when I tapped it with three fingers, but you can disable this by going to the Exposé & Spaces Preference panel and make it work as a third button.

I'm having the same issue. 3 finger tap works on my MacBook Pro trackpad, but nothing on the Magic Mouse. Going to try a reboot.

Apparently that version doesn't work on the Magic Mouse when it is connected to a macbook that has a multitouch trackpad... I was reading the discussion on the developer's page and found that someone could fix it, here is the link he gave: http://github.com/carlosh/MiddleClick , and here is the link to the built program: http://tinyurl.com/yzmhj6y .
- This is supposed to fix it but I couldn't try it because I don't have a macbook with a multitouch trackpad..

SWEET! The new binary works on my MacBook Pro!

So yeah, you just have to be sure to *touch* the mouse, not actually click it. But this is pretty hot. I love it.

Great, this was my only concern with the mouse. You really need that click for some things!

In the MacRumors forums, I found a link to another program that enables you to add more multitouch functions to the magic mouse, here is the link: http://blog.boastr.net/

It is supposed to work with the multitouch macbook (pro) and magic mouse. (the program only works in snow leopard).
