Hey guys,

I don't see any mention of middle click? Does it have this functionality? If not, that's a major flaw IMHO.

I tested it today in the Apple Store. Unfortunately, it doesn't. I use middle click for Exposé, so that's what's holding me from getting the new mouse. But I guess that can be solved in the future through software+multitouch. If Apple sees enough people complaining about the lack of 3rd and 4th "soft buttons", they may release a software update. I hope.

Apple are notoriously bad at heeding the complaints of it's customers...it's a numbers game. At no point will more than half the people with a product bother to complain...so more than half must be happy right? Yeah, makes no sense but I reckon that's how they work. Two firmwares back they removed a much used feature in iPhone/iPod touch devices (double click in any app while music was NOT playing to get a music pop up...this only works if music IS playing now) and despite the numerous forums and messages...despite a campaign to give feedback on the appropriate page they have released two firmwares since and not put the functionality back.

I was very tempted by it until I read it didn't have 3 and 4 finger gestures. That's a big omission in my opinion, especially for MacBook Pro users who are used to those gestures and want them with their desktop Macs.

How can you possibly use 3 and 4 finger gestures? The mouse isn't wide enough to support these.
A 4 finger gesture would probably throw the mouse right off your desk!

I've heard that clicking with two-fingers will enable a middle or third button...

There's no way to set actions for a "tertiary" or "quaternary" click. You can see in this video

http://www.apple.com/magicmouse/

at around 2:10, all the options that you can set in the system preferences for the Magic Mouse.

But from that interface, it looks like it was rushed or that there's plenty of space left for new actions... After all, that's the point of adding a multi-touch interface: flexibility.

Two fingers for "middle click" would be nice.

There's definitely no settings for a third "button" it in the Magic Mouse prefpane (in any of the screenshots that I've seen). But, you may be able to set it up via the Exposé prefpane, just like you would with any non-Apple mouse.

I think it'd make more sense to do a middle click with three fingers. There has always been complaints about people trying to "relearn" right click because you actually had to lift your index finger off the mouse surface to right click on the Mighty Mouse. We could see the same issue if this is the way to middle click, for people switching from a standard PC mouse. Three fingers would avoid the confusion, and it's still a comfortable click.

I don't browse the internet without a middle click, and more importantly I can't imagine throwing a grenade without middle-click in COD4 :P
So much for that piece of junk... but it's really preeeeettttttyyyyyy...

Personally, I never use middle click. But, I must say I love being able to scroll anywhere on the surface of the mouse. I love not having to go to the middle of the mouse to do.

You can't just complaign about things randomly. PLEASE GO TO: www.apple.com/feedback and request this functionality for the future!

If enough people send feedback they will definitely look into it.

Funny enough, you can't actually make feature requests for apple hardware peripherals (such as keyboards or mice).

The lack of middle click on this Magic Mouse is driving me nuts.

I don't really understand what all the fuss is about. Its not like you have to use Apple's rodents. If it doesn't do what you want, buy something else. Its not like you can't use any other USB mouse or whatever other input device you might want instead.

Yup. It's like saying, "Apple I won't buy your product unless you add this feature. In the mean time I'll go buy another product that does exactly what I want".

Here is a program that enables a "middle click" function (it is for the macbook's trackpad but also works on the Magic Mouse):

http://clement.beffa.org/labs/projects/middleclick/

Open the program and it will enable a 3 finger tap on the shell to work as a middle click [ you don't have to physically click the button ].

It apparently works only for Snow Leopard, but I tried it on an iMac G5 running Leopard and it has worked well so far.

Hope this helps.

This doesn't work if you have a Macbook with a multitouch trackpad...

I sugget to take a look at this:

http://blog.boastr.net/

This is a new app that enables the same functionality and so much more, but at the moment the three tap function on the Magic Mouse has been disabled.

Yes. BetterTouchTool works much better than MiddleClick. And three finger click is now enabled. Works great.

Works perfectly on an iMac (gen Spring 2009) with Mac OS X 10.6.2 installed. Just got the magic mouse and immediately discovered the missing third click. Was disappointed that I didn't know this sooner but figured Apple wouldn't take that away in a device called "magic" mouse. Boy, was I wrong, apparently. But, middleclick to the rescue. I only hope they pay you for the implementation and make it native in the System Preferences with an update.

The new mouse looks nice, but lack of middle click is kind of a serious impairment. I can't imagine not having middle-click for web browsing.

Seriously, just buy a nice Logitech, they're more ergonomic, and everything you can do with gestures on the Magic Mouse can be done with buttons, and more. Scroll wheel with middle click, and forward/back thumb buttons. Easier and more efficient than the swipe gestures anyway.

I forget if the mouse has zoom, but with Logitechs, you can just Ctrl-scroll wheel to zoom in and out.

middle click for web browsing? They already show you how to pan around. You won't need middle click anymore.

But if you do use a program like Autodesk Maya or Cinema4D then you'll need middle click. I like the mouse but will never get it just for web browsing alone.

I agree with getting a logitech or something ergo with buttons. When is Apple going to learn?

hey... check this out!

It works well with sketchup and Acad on parallels.

I like the magic prefs that you have the link for, but I am still having issues with it using Sketchup. The middle click does a pan instead of orbit without touching the control key. Are you having any issues like this? I am also using VM Fusion instead of Paralels.
