I've had an old macbook pro 15 inch with a matte screen and was always terrified to clean the screen. By the end of its life it was scratched all to hell haha. Iv heard these new screens are Glass. If thats the case can we use just water and a soft towel or do i dare even say windex lol (probably a horrible idea)

i had an older matte 2006 MBP that i admit was fairly difficult to clean. if i had a choice, i'd still prefer it over the glossy display on my current unibody. (it was a free replacement of my old MBP from Apple, so i don't really have that much to complain about)

the glossy is pretty easy to clean, a dry cloth usually does the trick. a spritz of cleaner helps for stubborn fingerprints

Whoa, how'd you get your old MBP replaced with a new one?

Anyways, I'm a white macbook owner. I usually clean the matte screen with that Apple-provided soft cloth.

with the glass screen, you can use windex with care and a soft cloth and it will be as glossy as the day you bought it :D

Get a microfiber cloth, like the kind eyeglass shops use to clean peoples' eyeglasses. They work well for cleaning the screen as well as other parts of the computer. If the stain, grease, etc. is particularly stubborn, moisten a corner of the cloth in water (squeeze out any extra, you want it slightly damp not dripping) and that should take care of it. If you're willing to spend a little money, go to RadTech (radtech.us) and buy a "ScreenSavrz", these are microfiber cloths custom cut to fit the MacBook Pro (they have versions for the MacBook 13" as well as many other laptops), you can put these cloths between the screen and the keyboard when you close the laptop, this helps protect the screen and prevents oils from the keyboard keys from depositing themselves on the screen.

I keep well on top of it by using the cloth that Apple provides with iMacs.

If it were really bad, I'd use the Apple soft cloth and Water. :)

The new unibody MacBooks and MacBook Pros also come with a decent-sized Apple microfiber cleaning cloth in the Everything Else folder in the box.

I find the only problems for my screen are fingerprints that build up around the edge of the screen from opening and closing it. For this, I simply use the provided cloth in a dry state and constantly swirl in counter-clockwise motion for a few minutes and it gets the job done beautifully.

I suppose for any harder stains this could be coupled with some water. These are glass screens as well so window cleaner could work, but I would try simple water first to be on the safe side.

When my glass screen had some smudges (I didn't touch it, honest! Musta been those meddlin' kids that never get offa my lawn!), I cleaned it with a soft cloth and some water. It does the trick nicely, and you don't have to worry about side effects of whatever they put into window cleaners.

Sandpaper and chocolate syrup...but occasionally I'll use a light cloth with some water.

After this has just been suggested here (and considering how much traffic this site has seen in the last 24 hours)?

"...good God, that's the third one today!"

I have a RadTech ScreenSavrz, and I use that to clean the screens of my mac and phone.

that looks like a great product! thanks for the suggestion. i use to use something similar in the old powerbook days when the keys would smash into the screen when you carried it.

I just use the FREE cleaning fluids you can get from Sam's Club or Costco's optometrist section. They just let you bring a bottle and fill it up. Just spray and wipe with a wash cloth. I've never used a better cleaner. I've payed 100+ dollars for computer cleaning fluids, and none of them worked as great as this method.

I got some iKlear Apple Polish from the Apple store. I know it sounds like a joke but it is a real product. The kit that I got had various cloths and cleaning spray and wipes and it works brilliantly. Now whenever my MBP starts looking a little grubby I have it back to new in no time.

Same here, works great. And it comes with travel wipes, very useful.

Yeah, iKlear does the job for me. The bottle of solution they give you is huge, and with the microfiber cloth, it makes the screen look like brand new again.

I hope everyone saying on here is using distilled water and not normal tap water! Tap water is conductive and can cause a short if it happens to land in the right place and power runs through it. I've read numerous articles about this online from cleaning phone screens, desktop monitors, laptop screens, even HDTV's and the consensus I've come to conclude is a 50/50 solution mix of 90% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. You can mix this very easily at home in a cheap spray bottle as well as the alcohol and distilled water. Granted you still want to have whatever you're cleaning powered off and unplugged/battery removed, but this solution has the lowest conductive properties for such an inexpensive price.

Here's a good article for cleaning tips...

I use that monster Electronic screen cleaner with the special cloth. I got it with a family discount but it works great! turns out nice, clean, and bright. Works great on all my LCD screens. I don't know if I'd get it at full price though. Monster usually = crazy mark ups.

I gotta say the same.

I despise Monster and all their products, except this one. I have no idea what they put in the solution, but it totally rocks.

I second the iKlear. It's the best surface cleaner I have ever used -- it will clean any part of any Apple product.

I just use a small amount of Glass cleaner for windows or mirrors does the job great.
