Everyone has already made every point imaginable on why to/not to get this phone. Bottom-line, buy it. There, that was easy.

I ended up getting one the weekend it came out. I ended up returning the phone 2 days later. The battery life is absolutely horrible. Was being told to recharge the phone after 3hrs 22 min of usage. That's really bad.

The other issue not a big one but still strange was the compass program is not accurate at all. Tested the app along side my GPS in my car. The iPhone was something like 20 degrees off the actual north reading. I also recalibrated the compass app 2 times and was still that much off. Not a big deal but if the app is there why not at least have a little close to the right reading.

Move to the UK, buy a PAYG handset and then get the Simplicity Tariff, so so much cheaper and only ties you into a monthly rolling contract.

I can't even get one until this August or something. I've basically decided to get the HTC Magic, after debating between that and the iPhone 3GS in my head.

I qualified for the upgrade. Bought a 16 gig 3gs for $199. Sold my 16gig 3g for $275. Going back to the apple store next week and trading in the "new 3gs for a 32 gig model so I can do the same dance next June when a new iPhone comes out with badass PA Semi chipset. If I were you, I would take the plunge now. the 3gs to me is the iPhone the way I expect the iPhone to be.

I upgraded from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS 32GB on launch day. So far it has been a good decision - setting up the new phone was easy - simply logged into MobileMe and all my contact were there just as before. Email accounts all added in seconds, music sync happened automatically over from iTunes. Everything just went very smoothly. I am getting better battery life, much improved loading times for apps, improved signal in my house which is a blackspot for my network (O2 UK) and all the other advertised benefits. I couldn't be happier - and I sold my old handset for £250 GBP and used the money to pay off my contract. I haven't used the video functionality yet as I am not really big on video but the new camera is very good, the new autofocus is amazing.

I upgraded my 3G to the new 3.0 firmware and while I liked most of the new features, it was pretty sluggish. I decided to bite the bullet and order the 3GS (I had to pay $399 as I wasn't up for an upgrade for another 6 months) I love it! The speed alone is worth the price. Wish it could be jailbroken already, but I'm a patient person. To make matters even better, I just sold my 3G on eBay this morning for $350! Yes, it was in good shape, but still....it almost made the 3GS free. If you can tolerate the price, go for it!

don't upgrade in december. you might as well hold out and wait for the next iteration.what your feeling now will be that much worse if you jump on it in december and come june apple anounces the next phone. at the very least you can expect the ram to double to 32/64 (if we go by what they've done in the past).

if you've been happy with your phone so far hold out. you will be much happier.

i have the new 3gs and it's great, i too had to wait for december but i have a family plan with my wife, who's phone hasn't been upgraded so she was eligable. upgraded her phone put my sim in :-) next year i can upgrade to the next phone on my plan.

once again if you can upgrade by let's say september do it. if not, wait for the next phone.

I was an original iPhone owner. When the 3g came out I wanted to rush right out to the store any buy it, but the idea of spending another $200 after spending $400 for the original was just too much. The thing I mostly missed was the GPS. The 3g network was still 'building out'.

Finally the 3gs came out and I bought it right away. Apple is going to come out with a new phone everyyear if AT&T keeps there contract 2 years we are all going to go through this in the off years. My recomendation is the 3gs is an incramental iPhone upgrade. Don't buy it in December when you contract allows. Wait until next June and be first in line for next years 3gf (the f stands for fast :-). You know it will have all the features of the 3gs, and many of them will be more refined, and I am sure in many cases better.

If money isn't an object, definitely worth the upgrade. I get better battery life than my 3G and the speed does so much for usability. If it were a month, I'd wait, but 6 months is a long time. I'd look at getting it now, restarting the clock so your next upgrade is closer, and sell the old 3G on eBay...unlock it and they are going for over $350 as of late last week. That price probably won't last so your incremental cost is probably better now than in December.

The speed mainly helps with large apps. Unless you play Monopoly or... oh wait, Sims 3... yes, you will appreciate the speed boost.

Okay so, personally, I can't afford the data on an iphone, so I can't tell you from personal experiance. However, I will say this much, do you need the upgrade? Are the features on the 3GS a necessity for you? Is the 5-10 second speed increase a big deal? Will you USE those features that only the 3GS has and NOT the 3G?

I can understand getting hte 3g from the standard, but, to get the 3GS from the 3G when you don't get a subsidy on it, and increasing your contract by another term does not seem practical.

Is it just me that the 32G storage is a big reason for me to upgrade to 3GS? But given the heat issue, I will wait until Apple has fixed the issue either through software or hardware.

plain and simple ......Wait. Looks like the iPhone should be on a 2 year upgrade cycle. Apple is making a new one every year because they can get fan boys like us to keep buying them. This updated iPhone is not a "new" phone just a few new features. If you wait till next June you will find yourself a free agent (out of contract) and will be able to get the best deal out there. If the Verizon rumors are correct we all may benefit from a little competition. Free agents usually get the best contracts just look at when the Oakland Raiders signed Larry Brown after his Super Bowl performance.

I'd wait until December when you can get the discount. I don't think the extra speed and few new features are worth spending extra money to get the 3GS early.

I'm personally waiting to see what Apple releases next year and skip this generation of the iPhone. Just isn't that compelling to me.

The 3GS are running hot. As in scorch the white cover of the iphone hot. There is a thermal cutoff to prevent the phone from burning up and it is tripping on some phones. I would wait. I think they have some problems to work out with this version.

I've read all the responses here, and I've decided to wait (or hold off until the next major upgrade). I'm still happy with my 3G, and while all of the new features sound like they're working out for people, I just don't think they're worth the cost to me right now. I carry around a video camera and still camera at all times anyway!

I figure the next iPhone will have many more visual physical upgrades, new camera, front camera?, etc, plus this added speed of the 3GS, plus hopefully better battery life. The next iPhone will be so much better.

Now now Ms. B, haven't you noticed how 3.0 is slowly eating away the 3G model? Mine's pretty much slow as hell, and most of the apps (including Apple's own and 3rd party apps) keep crashing, showing weird graphical artifacts and what not.

3.0 on 3G is just not worth it, so the natural choice is to upgrade to 3GS and follow on with the monopoly.

Sounds like battery issues are in part due to the new OS. Rumors are that it will be fixed with the OS update coming soon to the 3.0.

I'm with the guy a few posts back that the next gen iphone will be worth the wait. Buggs worked out of new OS and hoping for an updated design of the exterior.

Is ATT exclusivity still looking like its up in early 2010 or was there an extension signed? Throwing Verizon in the mix would be good for us.

The 3GS looks really cool so I can't wait to see the next gen version after that. I am with wtryder on the AT&T thing. I hope the iPhone goes to Verizon. It has much better coverage. I still have reservations about the monthly costs though. I am hoping the new iPod Touch in September will be super awesome as well.

There is still no multi-tasking, so I'd wait for the next iPhone.

I am betting Apple held back on this iPhone upgrade in order to entice the carriers to bid higher for the next period of iPhone exclusivity. AT&T's reign is probably almost up. Bring on the Verizon, with a greatly superior data network!

I agree there is a benefit to holding off on upgrades in order to better negotiate a deal but if you look at Apple's product release cycles they tend to stick with a design for a couple releases before changing it, historically. The original Ipod was a couple years in before the mini came out. I feel like the next gen will be truely worth the wait and it just seems like there are a few bugs with overheating and battery life that are deterring me. I can't help but feel that the new chips in the 3gs could have something to do with battery consumption or the over heating issue but I'm no engineer and I havent read anything regarding this.
