To buy or not to buy? I was really ready to hold off for a long time, but now everyone is telling me that the speed makes it worth it.

I'm not up for a subsidy until December! Should I wait?

I was in the same boat - no subsidy until December, which makes it $399 / $499 right now, depending on the model. However, after selling my old iPhone 3G for $200 (and applying that towards the purchase of a 3GS), it ends up being the same price as a fully subsidized 3GS! In that case, I felt like it was a no brainer.

Hello, new iPhone!

And yes, the speed totally makes it worth it. Especially at the "cheaper" price!

I got the 3G on opening day last year and I was eligible for the subsidized price for the GS. I got the new phone and sold my 3G on EBay for the same cost the same day so it was a total wash for me.

The improved battery life makes it worth it. For most people I'd say wait until December. For you... couldn't you almost justify it as a business expense?

What improved battery life are you speaking of? The number one issue I have with my 3GS is the battery life, or lack thereof...

the battery life on the 3gs is actually worse than the 3g, so "improved battery life" is not a reason to upgrade.

Agreed. Apple claimed better battery life, but they lied. I have about 3 hours less battery life than on my 3G. Awful. Same settings too! Grr.

I wasn't up for subsidy until February 2010, however I prequalified on the website saying I use it for enterprise and I qualified for the subsidy. I went to the store and purchased it for $199 and they put me on the standard consumer plan. I definitely say wait for it. There are some bugs with the power drain, the fact that they recommend I turn 3G off to save battery is BS. I went and bought the morphie powerpack so I can make it through the day. There also seems to be wifi issues with signal and disconnection, I run a network with an incredible WIFI infrastructure and I constantly get disconnected which sucks as I'm an avid ICall user.

I'd say on average the battery life on my 3GS is about the same as my 3G, i.e. I still have to charge it every night. But considering the faster processor and improved graphics chip, I think the fact that it's the same is actually impressive.

Are you sure that's not the Mophie battery pack? A lot of people complain signal strength dropped after installing it as it obstructs the internal attena

I don't think if you're on a 3G with OS3.x you need to change to the 3GS. The features and speedup of the 3GS don't justify the price - subsidised or not - for me at the moment. Sure they are nice but they aren't as "must-have" as when the 3G came out. The new camera is nice but since I only use the iPhone for snapshots that doesn't make a difference.

So in my opinion it's better to wait 8 months for the iPhone 3GSS in 2010 ;)

wait! $500 is definitely not worth it!

you should probably wait...the processor speed is not the killer functionality of the 3gs as some apps still take forever to load and there are still hangups with the OS.

the killer new functionality for me is;

* voice dialing
* in-line volume controls on the headphones (nobody ever mentions this)
* map orientation (showing which direction you're facing when viewing google maps)
* video camera
* auto focus and 3 mp camera

Update from 3G right? Well if you can stand to wait until December (like most people need to to get the rebate)-- you'll be screwed 6 months later with the next refresh. I say, give in and buy it full price out of contract-- or go cold turkey and wait for next year. That last thing you want to do is get locked into another 2 years of contract with a refresh around the corner. And, to boot, if next year other carriers are available, you won't have to pay a early termination fee to switch.

+1 on this guys aurgument. Everyone seems to be forgetting about the LTE iphone next year. Rumors are brewing that multiple carriers in the U.S. will get it. You definately dont want to be locked into 2year contract starting December then take take the unsubsidized cost of the LTE phone or early termination fee for switching to Verizon or Sprint.

The iphone 3G plus OS 3.0 is good enuff to last you thru june 2010. But if you are uber rich and money is a joke to you then go ahead and get the 3GS.

If you are coming from different carrier or first gen iphone then this argument does not apply to you.

BUY IT! Unless you never use the browser, then its not worth it. Page loading on the 3GS makes the 3G feel like it was on GPRS.

Veronica, I'm dealing with the same dilemma. However, I just can't bring myself to pay 400 dollars for a marginally upgraded iPhone. On the otherhand, the lag when flicking through screens and menus is very apparent on the 3G. Ahhh!
