Seriously, I think because of jailbreaking my 3G on 3.0 it's saved me the want of getting a new 3GS. For your information, my iPhone 3G happens to be the poster boy for the Wikipedia article: http://bit.ly/pUAZ6

With stacks, NES/SNES/Gensis emulation, custom slide screen, SbSettings (quick slide of the bar gets you options to turn off 3G, Edge, Wifi, and others in one convenient menu), and Cycorder (which records decent 15 FPS video) and some other things, I really do think jailbreak functionality saved me from a 3GS.

Anyone agree?

I love the iPhone, but I hate how apple and ATT have it on lockdown, and I hate the no MMS and no landscape keyboard (until now). If it wasn't for jailbreaking I would use my Touch Pro full time. I love the console emulators, definitely cycorder (who needs 3GS), SbS is a must, and the FPS's like Wolfenstein and Quake.

I really loved the extra functionality when I had my 3G jailbroken. SBSettings was great, and being able to send an SMS from any app using biteSMS was really handy. The only thing was that I really noticed a slowdown in speed having those couple background apps running, so I upgraded to the 3GS. Can't wait until the Dev Team releases the jailbreak!

My 3g's battery lasts about 1.5 days with no jailbreaking. How long does it last for you with background apps as compared to before you jailbroke your 3g?

Apple said it was a real drain. Yes/No?

I love the jailbreak and the apps that can run at the same level as Apple apps, but I scream for lack of RAM. Even with minimal use I have maybe 40MB of RAM and while playing any kind of demanding game, it starts to stutter. Thankfully I have the option to look at running proccesses and kill any that I don't need, but it makes me want to just go buy a 3GS just so I won't have to hassle it with it.

I just jailbroke my 3g and its fun again. It makes Apple seem so greedy, trying to withhold many of the capabilities of the device. Has anyone played with psx4iphone. I got Final Fantasy Tactics to run, but it is just a bit too slow. Someone mentioned setting the cycle to 2.5. I know how to change the cycle but I don't know where the number is displayed so I can tell what it is set at. Also check this out http://www.icontrolpad.com/, I can't wait for full screen and real controls. Jailbreak Rocks!

I've got to agree. I have a jailbroken iPod Touch (second-gen) that I've yet to upgrade to 3.0 just because of all the jailbroken functionality. I think that the most useful app I have is imobilecinema, which is a Safari extension that allows you to watch Flash-based video from many different websites, including MegaVideo, MySpace Video, and others.
Has anyone tried jailbreaking 3.0? I've heard that it's possible, but would like a set of instructions to follow before I take the plunge.

I used Redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0 and so far it works like a dream. This is the guide I used. http://www.ismashphone.com/iphone-jailbreak/index.html. One tip, do not install Icy when you first jailbreak, it causes an error, only install Cydia. You can download Icy later. I'll have to try imobilecinema. Maybe I can watch my adult swim. I wanna know, when if ever, I'll be able to watch Netflix!

I have held off buying an iPhone but I am going to take the plunge in a couple of weeks. I really want to unlock it. My Blackberry is unlocked and I have SIM cards for different countries. I really can't afford to pay roaming charges, they are outrageous and this is a way to do this. Unlocking the Blackberry was very simple and it was permanent.

Since there appear to be many jailbreak experts in this thread, I thought I would tap into your expertise to ask some questions:

-to SIM unlock the iPhone, do I have to jailbreak it?
-Will OS upgrades re-lock the iPhone?
-are there any downsides to jailbreaking / unlocking? Do you loose any functionality?

Thanks

Yeah, you have to jailbreak to unlock. When you complete the jailbreak, the unlock is available from within Cydia.

Yes, any OS upgrades will re-lock the phone but the jailbreaks are usually released pretty soon after the official updates. You can even download a jailbreak app that backs up all of the other jailbreak apps so it makes re-jailbreaking easier (that was a lot of jailbreaks)

You won't lose any functionality of the phone. A jailbreak only allows you to add non-Apple approved apps along side your App Store apps. And, if you want, undoing the jailbreak is as easy as restoring to your last backup.

What is the name of the jailbreak app that backs-up and restore your jailbreak apps?

AptBackup - install it, backup, upgrade to new OS, jailbreak again, reinstall AptBackup, restore. You can find it in Cydia or Icy

A disclaimer though, it doesn't actually backup apps and settings. It really just creates a list of your jailbreak apps and re-installs them all at once. Still though, it's better than installing everything one at a time.

I personally can't go unjailbroken for very long. I love customising the device, I like putting my own touch to the device without being controlled to the looks of the interface as Apple has.

jailbreaking is a must for me. i cant stand having to go through 3 or 4 menus just to turn off 3g and turn on wifi. plus free tethering. which i am using right now to type this on my macbook pro while on a amtrak train.

I love Jailbreaking my phone after each new update, i find the freedom not being tied down to a specific carrier phenomenal. In the last two days ive finally gotten MMS working flawlessly on my 2G iPhone, yay!

Can't beat the Jailbreak. sbSettings and backgrounder really increase the speed of my 3G. You can keep applications that you run often open in the background so that they load up faster, or, if things are running slow, kill some processes and speed the whole thing right up! Great stuff!

SBSettings has the option under the "Processes" button to kill any open processes.

I haven't tried Backgrounder yet but I'll take your word for it. I'm gonna try to install it on my Jailbroken 3G. Jailbreaking, like the word itself, breaks you away from the closed platform of Apple. Really love the freedom Jailbreaking has given me. If the Apple iPhone has all the features I want in it, I won't be neding to jailbreak it.

Its almost a new phone when you Jailbreak it. Just being able to change the theme makes the phone more appealing. I wish Apple would realize the power of innovation from the user community and allow more customization.
