What's your best use case for an iSlate?

I'm actually hoping to use this to replace my kindle, plus the pen and paper i usually carry around for notes.

If you don't mind reading on an LCD screen why did you buy a Kindle in the first place? There are plenty of tablets with LCD screens already on the market, and I can't imagine any Apple tablet being capable of more than any existing tablet PC. The main (only?) benefit of an e-ink reader is the e-ink display (no eye strain, weeks of battery life).

Sofa web browsing.

Tablets already exist that can do that. Why is this so far non-existent tablet being hyped so much? Even before it's announced it seems that Apple are being credited with inventing something that's been out for years.

That's the trick here, right? I think they need to find a use case for a device like this, because it's already fairly well proven that tablet devices don't have much (or any) mainstream appeal right now. They need to find something that people didn't know they wanted to do with a device they didn't know they needed. I think the idea of an all-in-one media platform (books, magazines, newspapers, music, movies, and, of course, web) could be the key here. Of course, it's all speculative.

distribution is as important as the use case. you can already get a lot of the content we're talking about in existing win tablets, but you know, itunes-ifying it is going to be important.

Following on from that, one of my friends said that using it for graphic novels/comic books would be very compelling for those fans. I can imagine they'd look awesome on a lovely, bright, high colour screen.

@blam seconded. the iphone was groundbreaking in many areas, but slick integration with iTunes is what really made the advanced functionality consumer-friendly. i'd expect more of the same from apple with this product.

I agree as well. One of the main things keeping iPods on top is their integration with iTunes. When the Palm Pre was able to sync with iTunes, it probably was a bit scary for the people in Cupertino. I wish that Apple would put a touch screen on the MacBooks. I still have no clue how typing will be on the "iSlate." I'm sure Apple will be able to pull it off. If it took over 3 rejections from his Steveness, is "surprisingly affordable," and Jobs is happy with it, it's probably pretty good.

Well being an Apple product there will be a certain number of people who will realise they need this device regardless of how useful it actually is.

Unless this device (if it even exists) is something seriously groundbreaking I can't see any use for it that couldn't be done better with a Windows tablet with decent specs.

And like you suggest, who wants a tablet? If anybody wanted them they would be already selling in big numbers.

For reading - fail - bright screen shooting light at your eyes, battery failing after a few hours.
For PC use - fail - no keyboard.
Browsing Internet - yes, but why not just use a laptop or even a netbook? Given that laptops are very common now, why buy another device that doesn't have any tangible benefits?
Remote control of other devices (TV, hi-fi, etc.) - yes, but any PDA/smartphone can already do this, and I'd argue that most people who would want this tablet would own an iPhone.
Portable use - the screen would almost certainly be useless in sunlight, and the lack of a keyboard makes it a crippled netbook. I Assume the battery life would be sub par too.
Video - again, why not just use a netbook or PMP if on the road and stick to your laptop or netbook at home?

I'm no Apple fan, but I can't imagine them coming up with such a useless product. I would never own an iPhone or iPod or Mac, but they are all quality products that are reasonably competitive with the best products in their categories, but a tablet...there is a reason nobody uses the tablet form factor, and I doubt Apple can polish it enough to overcome the inherent problems with it.

That would be bad. One of the biggest failures of the iPhone is the app censorship. It is a disgrace that people give money to Apple and accept that Apple knows better than they do what content they should be able to use on their phone.

If this tablet PC had the same restrictions it would remove any benefit the device could possibly have (that of being a larger iPod Touch device with a large display and the usefulness of a full computer).

One thing to keep in mind is that Apple is in a position right now to DECIDE what has mainstream appeal. If they can create a tablet that hooks into their existing app store infrastructure people WILL buy it.

While the Courier does look more interesting than this iSlate, it is still essentially a tablet PC. I can't conceive of any use for it that can't be done better with either a laptop or a pen and paper (or both).

When I have a laptop that can do anything why would I also buy a second device that has restrictions on its capabilities?

Still, it's only fair to wait for the official specs on these devices and see what software is available. With technology it's hard to tell up front how useful something will be.

My money would be on the Courier to be the better device simply because of Microsoft's track record.

Yeah, I have no idea what the use case for this tablet is.

Then again, I thought the same thing for the rumored iPhone, and now it owns my life.

Smartphones were around for years before the iPhone, and a huge number of people used them in the same way you use your iPhone (but without app censorship :) )

Tablets have been around for years, but nobody is buying them.

The same use case as a laptop, with a new, more tactile/intuitive interface methodology.

I think people are getting too caught up in the hardware. We've seen tablets, we're seeing lots now with pretty decent insides, but the key to a supposed iSlate is the interaction design. Something Apple is very good at.

I think it's going to be very hard to guess, but I'd put money on it being a finger AND pen input device.

The obvious use case would be as an extended app experience from the iPhone app store. But to be more specific, I see the core functionality threefold: a better reader (albeit without eInk, but color which lends it more to magazine subscriptions), a remote web browsing experience and a video playback device.

Keep in mind: I'm laying out the use case for ANY developer who decides to create this device. Doesn't have to be Apple.

The key piece of information we'll learn is how they'll price it. Anything more than $599 (which is what I expect) and they'll be leaving the door open for another product offering.

This thing would not have a better screen for reading than e-ink. No technology exists yet. If people are going to use this thing for reading they will get sore eyes and the battery would run flat very quickly. Since it probably wouldn't have a user-replaceable battery I would see the battery dying completely after 12 months like many laptop batteries do with a lot of constant charging/depleting.

Reading magazines on an LCD screen pretty much equates to being a web browser anyway, which current tablet or laptop or netbook can do easily.

Apple may pull something out of nowhere and create a useful device that nobody outside of Apple can imagine, but all of the comments I've seen around the 'net about this device hint at it being no different to any existing tablet PC but with an Apple interface, which in my opinion is a bad thing.

An Apple Tablet would replace 95% of my laptop usage. I may not buy another laptop if the iSlate pans out.

I'll second @devron and add games. How can you forget games on the iPhone/iPod Touch? A 10" screen calls for a re-fresh of some of the best iPhone games. Fieldrunners with some new levels and a few gameplay tweaks would entertain me for weeks. And, it might also make games like Doom more playable because the screen is so much larger. Additionally, I'm sure we'll see a slew of new games, and new use cases arise due to the form factor and increased horsepower.

@greedobuck brings up a good point about magazines and laptops, but having the touch screen just seems better, IMO, for reading magazines on a device.

One of my biggest concerns for the mythical device is how I'll comfortably hold it while I'm using it. I don't have a case for my iPhone because I rarely drop it. But, I'm guessing that something of that size would get dropped a little more often.

I don't think anybody could really tell what they are doing with the tablet. Like @ryan said, there isn't much appeal now. They have to come up with something nobody has ever seen or thought of.
