I was reading Engadget a few weeks before Apple announced the iPad, and it was around this time that the first rumour about the event surfaced from All Things D, and this rumour was reported by Engadget. In the comments section of the story, I found the following post (not by be) and I though that it was highly appropriate given some of the discussion that are going on right now about the iPad. The original posters name was Mark Stone.

[/begin quote]
Let me hash out the series of events that will befall the readers on Engadget, just to take away some of the suspense.

1) Apple will release a beautiful tablet with a UI that no other company would have ever thought of implementing, but they will leave out a vital feature that most geeks (but not regular folk) find invaluable, like the ability to play music with a bitrate of infinity squared.

2) As a result of this missing feature, the geeks will angrily dismiss anyone who likes the so-called Tablet, including the editors of Engadget. In fact, the geeks will even question whether the Apple Tablet is actually a Tablet, due to this missing feature, which will be ironic because no such definition for what constitutes a "true" Tablet will currently exist. A new definition containing said missing feature will quickly be created by the offended geeks, for the sole purpose of bashing the Tablet henceforth.

3) Months later the Tablet will be released to glowing reviews and lines outside Apple Stores, enraging the offended geeks further. As a result, any Tablet related posts made by sites like Engadget will swell with angry geeks, dismissing the Tablet out of hand. Taunts of "Well, the iTablet is nice, unless you want to listen to music in a bitrate of infinity squared," will be repeated ad nauseum until it becomes an annoying cliche.

4) As a result of the popularity of said Tablet posts, sites like Engadget make even more Tablet related posts, which in turn, cause the angry geeks to accuse sites like Engadget of being "biased" for Apple. The click rates on the hated Tablet posts go even higher until invariably, it wins gadget of the year in magazines like Time.

5) Shortly after the iTablet makes a big splash and great sales, several companies will promise to come out with Tablets that contain the missing feature that the angry geeks have been wailing about, but the imitation Tablets can't quite "touch" the new revolutionary interface that Apple has designed expressly for their Tablet. As a result, the so-called "iTablet Killers" don't make quite as big as an impact.

6) The few people who are actually brave enough to praise Apple for the iTablet, will mock the new "iTablet Killers" by pointing out just how much the other companies rip off Apple's new revolutionary UI. The angry geeks will respond in turn by pointing out that Apple didn't invent Tablets, and will even dig out an obscure company in Romania that did Apple's revolutionary UI first.

7) The controversy about the iTablet finally dies down when rumors surface that Apple is working on a new gaming console. Angry geeks everywhere start tearing their hair out.

Firstly, I have an iMac, Windows 7 notebook, and an Ubuntu Linux Mini-ITX system. Getting into religious discussions is silly so I keep away from that.

I probably won't buy an iPad for a few reasons that I hope are viewed as consumer-oriented as opposed to "geeky":

1. Lack of multitasking -- Apple seems to be insistent on crippling their own O/S, Unix, which is perfectly capable of multi-processing and multi-threading within each process. I can easily imagine needing to do two things at once on hardware which is capable of doing so. For example, sending/receiving one or more mail in background while I am operating interactively with a browser or composing a note. Another: printing or copying files to another system in background. At $500-$830 for a tablet, I expect it to be a cut above the rest in overall throughput and user response time (not too geeky, I hope). Not to worry.....people like Anandtech will surely run performance tests of the iPad and its current competition.

2. Apple should support all of the multimedia formats (E.g. Flash) in wide use on iMac, Linux, Unix, and Windows. They certainly have the expertise in-house (very smart and capable engineers). Yes, I do like Quicktime. But, there are other worthy media formats (get ready for HTML5).

3. Lack of standard USB port or SD slot - Apple keeps coming out with proprietary (Apple-only) connectors. This doesn't just hurt the geeks like me (I confess!). It is reduces the choices for consumers, in general.

4. At $500, they could have included a usable GPS function. Why must I pay extra ($130) for 3G connectivity? Now, its a $630 tablet with only $16GB of storage. Remember how slow an iPhone was before 3G? The real Apple enthusiasts are probably going to plunk down $830 for 3G and 64GB. Hopefully, it will be all they expect it to be.

5. No 16:9 capability. The 4:3 display will probably cause movies to be played with thick black bars at the top and bottom. What a poor viewing experience (black bars and low resolution)! Okay, I'll go have a look when they come out.

6. In 2010, no HDMI output connector??? Not even a DVI connector??? My $350 netbook has an HDMI output connector to go with the NVIDIA IONITX video and HD audio chipset..

For me, I wouldn't miss the lack of camera. Other people might feel different.

Want a preview of iPad competition? Put "tablet ipad competitor" in your google window and press Enter. I predict that there will be a very easy to use Linux-based tablet from several sources before this year is out in addition to one from Sony for Windows. It will be interesting to see how much you have to pay for 3G and 64GB of storage.

Having said all that, I promise to be a good boy and go down to the Apple store and have a good look when they come out.

One last comment to the "haters" and "fanboys" that have made extreme comments. Please focus on usability and the rights of consumers. Try to advocate concisely and accurately. Thanks in advance.

Though I did have a couple of gdgt users in mind when I posted this, you weren't one of them coologuy. You do seem to have some legitimate complaints about the iPad rather than the irrational and opinionated rantings posted by some other people :)

I neither love nor hate Apple, or any other company for that matter. I may like them for a while (for example, HTC are putting out some impressive phones at the moment), but I don't permanently pin my loyalty to them purely out of principle because, let's face it, they're not really gonna be that loyal to you in return.

I just don't believe in brand loyalty, and I judge every product based on its individual merits, and right now I feel Apple are on a role. I think your right about the iPad's role in your personal ecosystem, and I agree that it's incapable of replacing a netbook as an ultraportable computer. I mean, what's the point of carrying around that keyboard dock, or any other bluetooth keyboard when you can carry around a single device and have the screen at a comfortable orientation (widescreen) for both work and leisure.

I think the iPad is more suited to use around the house, and indeed I intend to get one for just that - it's never going out the front door. Spending most of my working day in front of a computer screen leads me to believe that even though this has a backlit LCD display, it'll be fine for me as a reader. I'm quite interested in the idea of newspaper subscriptions on it, and I'm not interested in dropping $270 for a Kindle that can only display eBooks, when I can get the Kindle app on any iPhone OS device. It'll also be good as a coffee table computer for referring to IMDb or Wikipedia, and with the various remote control apps currently in the app store, it can act as a hub for your various appliances (Boxee, Sonos units, Airtunes, etc).

I can also see how it would function as a productivity device, not for writing document, but for syncing with your work computer before you take it away to a meeting where you'll give a presentation, or simply for taking notes (if the rumours about handwriting on the device are to be believed).

I think Apple have pitched this wrong and I think that too many people are judging it based solely on what Steve Jobs has said, but there are many ways in which this device can be useful, even to "angry geeks" :)

Agree too: I will initially purchase an iPad mostly for books and magazines, but I'm quite sure I will use it for many other purposes as new apps and accessories become available.

But I don't agree about replacing netbooks. It won't replace netbook for people who want a netbook as an ultra-portable laptop, but it will replace netbooks for people who want a netbook as an appliance to perform some specific tasks.

Whether it is for domestic usage as a secondary computer (desktop + iPad), for students or for professional usages with dedicated apps and accessories, I can indeed see the iPad taking a piece of the netbook market and even the laptop market.

And think about the optimized iWorks suite (which I like a lot on my iMac) or OmniGroup wonderful productivity apps which should be available quickly (http://blog.omnigroup.com/2010/02/04/introducing-omnipad
/)
and one can see that the iPad has a lot of potential as an all-purpose business appliance.

The iPad is definitively a game changer for me: still one and half month before it is available and you can already see a lot of people thinking about how the iPad could improve their business.

Very exciting I would say.

I do not see how Ipad has been pitched the wrong way when it has received so much attention. In the end, Apple will sell millions of Ipads and the Ipad will be a successful tablet. So where is the fault? Well, people are reading WAYYYYY too much into Jobs' comments about netbooks.

for comments like this I would really like to have the "like" option here in discussions. I fully agree, especially on your first two paragrphs!

As for the iPad, I don't really care until I had a chance to have it in my hands and try it. Plenty of freinds which ordered it before it was anounced ;)

Cheers and keep up the good discussions, that is why I'm here on gdgt...

I just despise SJs way of doing marketing and presentations really. It has nothing to do with the product itself but with his arrogant way of presenting himself. He promises a lot and does not necessarily deliver (granted, a lot of Apples products are great and I like them, I don't mean to diss their products but their communication style).

Yes, Yes, we all love coolguy1957, and his iPod Touch XL reference.

But for those who understand technology, we simply have to look at one particular app, to realize that the can in fact interface directly with any computer of your choosing. Thereby being a true "bridge" device into the future of cloud computing.

The iPad isn't suppose to replace a computer, its supposed to be a portable solution, with its most important features being battery life, screen resolution/interaction, and UI / OS stability.

I do not claim to understand just any technology. But I don't see how the iPad is any cloud device... maybe I'm wrong but then it's not the end of the world if I don't buy the iPad ;) In the end critics only state their thoughts as any supporter do. We all haven't had a handon with the device and as for the battery live, I'm suspicious at least ;) OS stability is not tested yet and screen resolution definitely is not one of its strengths... but we will see about the final product when out.

The only hate I see is the hate the technical illiterate have for the geeks who help them keep their computers running.

The vital feature is the ability to do TWO things at once. I think there's going to be a lot of unhappy iPad owners.

Or the hate the geeks have for the technical illiterate who prefer to use a device which does not require any help to keep it running?

The vital feature is the ability to do what you want to do without having to seek help from a geek.

Listen to your family members or your friends who are "technical illiterate"... can you really see hate in their thoughts about the iPad? I cannot myself: only curiosity.

Hate comes from people who fear the iPad as this kind of device may be the precursor of a new generation of computers which does not require to be a geek to use it fully. Hate comes from geeks who are afraid to become obsolete soon.

I originally did not like this device after hearing the announcement. Then I was able to look up the specs online. The 3G model has a built in GPS. With that I am sold! I was looking for a larger ipod touch like device, between 7" and 10". I use my iPhone just mainly for note taking, email, internet, pandora, skype and youtube. (Note taking using Notebook, works like palm's memopad app with online sync) So this will be perfect for me. Having no contract to use the 3G is great as well. I only have to use it when I know I won't be near any wifi spots. I only hope the price gets slashed a little bit more, or that they integrate the rumored "front camera" into the device. Also, this device will be even more awesome when jailbroken. Hopefully Geohot or the Dev Team will crack this one open.

What do you think "no contract" means? That you'll be able to pay by the "cup" of 3g? I doubt they'll have that, but if they do, the price will be excessive; and there would mostly likely be a base access charge. It will be cheaper to pay by the month. You're not stuck with them for two years; you're stuck with them forever. If you don't pay, you've got no service, and your device is just a... a big iPod.

I genrally skip comments from posters who have displayed an inherent bias against Apple. I think it is telling if a person always makes negative remarks and makes very few positive remarks. I also frown when these people defensively add, "Hey, I have an ipod or macbook." Basically, they are trying to disguise their bias.

This website has a few of these types of posters however engadget has many many of these posters. They live and breathe for Apple threads and negative remarks.

I think AppleInsider is a great website for an Apple fix without many endlessly negative posters

Apple insider reads like an echo chamber whenever I dare go there, but to each their own.

Some people are pessimist, I'm one for certain. The more tech savvy I've gotten, the more the little things about Apple products bug me. The wonky bluetooth implication on the iPod touch.

Also I'm bothered by the fanboyism, frankly on both sides and some of Apple marketing is starting to bother me, the Mac/PC ads are so tired, the app for that ads have become a cliché, and the iPad product video rubbed me the wrong way.

Engadget had gotten bad, it was sort of like the revers in serenity, most of the people just stopped caring but that remaining fraction had gotten hyper aggressive, thats why they turned off comments. I hope I come a cross as far to jaded for my age and not as simply biased, I was for while I've added the magic mouse and newest generation iPod touch to my list. I'm over fanboyism.

I like Apple I'm just sick of no nothing fanboys and I'm sick of the backlash.

Chasingcolor I'd like to apologize to you and others like you for myself and on behalf of everyone who agrees with my post.
